The football club is an arm of the famous Rio soccer club Vasco da Gama, whose home is in the Lagoa burrough of Rio, and are in turn an extension of the Vasco da Gama rowing team, which was the first team/league sport established in Brazil. Many soccer clubs grew out of the rowing teams and adopted their names and colors.
