Washington State entered the AP poll for the first time, at #25, in the January 11th AP Top 25 poll, becoming the 158th different team to be ranked since the poll's inception in 1977. And Tennessee enters the poll at #23.

The top of the poll experienced a little shuffling. Stanford, Louisville and NC State remained 1-2-3. UCONN tallied two points less than NC State, coming in at #4. South Carolina remains 5th and Baylor stayed 6th.

Then, Texas A&M at #7, UCLA #8, Maryland jumped 3 spots to #9 and Oregon rounded out the top 10 at #10.

Texas fell from 17 to 21.

Every one has nearly lost or lost to an inferior opponent except Stanford.

And UConn and NcState, but outside of one game they haven't really been challenged much.

Interesting year. I think this year will be like 2016 where a 4 seed and a 7 seed made the Final Four + an Oregon State type of team.

Do we have a link to the 30 voters so we can see who voted for NC State (and the other order of voting)?

Me thinks Deb "vote for anything ACC" Antonelli was the lone NC State voter and also suspect she has UConn #6, 7, or 8 as is her wont...

I'd bet 10 sandwiches that Wake Forest has never been ranked
You're on, what kind sandwiches are we talking?

I think one year they played Maryland for the ACC title. I'm sure they were ranked that year.

I dont recall Wake Forest ever playing for a ACC title. I do remember they played Maryland in the semis in 2012. That was a memorable game...... a heated game....

Wash St was indeed the last P5.

wake forest has 2nd fewest with just 5 appearances
Followed by Indiana (33) and Pitt (34)

numbers are before today’s poll

You're correct. It was the semis.
Wake was ranked for 5 weeks way back in 1987-88.

Big east has 10/11 with only Butler missing
Considering that Butler has around 5,100 students and is a private university, it may be hard for them to get quality players, especially when they are competing against Purdue, Indiana, Norte Dame, Indiana State, just to name a few nearby.

Well I hadn't even gotten my driver's license when they were ranked... so I deserve some slack
Heck I was a SFC with 15 years in the Army, with a wife and son. Your a young one there triad. :)

Wake Forest, back when current host Jen Hoover was playing as Jenny Mitchell, got all the way up to #16 during the 1987-88 season, and spent 5 weeks in the top 20 (the poll was only 20 teams back then).

That Wake Forest team beat NC State twice that year, which was Kay Yow's first with a losing record. Two highly-recruited players for NC State were not academically eligible to play that season and the Wolfpack Women struggled to a 10-17 record.

Deb Antonelli did not have NC State at #1 in the previous weeks that the Wolfpack Women were receiving #1 votes, so I'm fairly confident it was not her.

It was Chad Conine. Deb Antonelli had NC State #3 on her ballot.

I'll be taking names for whoever put Stanford at #4. Oh, wait, it's just one name. NC State, South Carolina, UConn, and then Stanford? Interesting choice of rankings. Louisville doesn't get any love either, behind Baylor at #6.

I still think the biggest disgrace here is West Virginia beating Tennessee, and then thrashing Texas by 30 doesn't get them ranked ahead of either team when their only loss is to Baylor. They weren't even 26th. Just goes to show what name brand can do for a team.

Kudos to Washington State. Etheridge seems to have the program trending in the right direction. The Pac 12 is a tough conference but she could be making inroads.

Washington State is, indeed, a feel-good story. Success has been fleeting for that program over the years, for sure. And in this trying day and time, we need a feel-good story like this to take our minds off things.
