I liked this article, as well as the one about the Terps giving up their cell phones during the tournaments.

"Top recruits had stayed away because of the Huskies’s mediocre history, to say nothing of the dull campus. During those early years, Auriemma tried to convince Chris Dailey, his top lieutenant, to drive prospects to Yale’s picturesque grounds in New Haven and tell them this was Storrs."

There is nothing like Geno's humor!:)

Anyone else catch the fact error in the story? (hint it is about Rebecca)

That she thought Geno was a soulless unsympathetic monster? No, I think that's true.

If you mean that Mass. was technically home at that point, well she was born in Hartford.

Some nuggets there I hadn't heard before. And always interesting to hear from Kerry Bascom.

"Connecticut had reached its first Final Four earlier in 1991, a few months before Lobo signed with the Huskies to play in her home state"

"she chose to stay home and play for the Huskies"

I thought it was an error too, and looked it up. Finally decided it wasn't significantly erroneous.

RL was born in Hartford. Most sources say she was raised in Southwick, MA.

But, although the family moved from Granby, CT to Southwick when RL was two, the kids went to elementary school in Granby.

There isn't much difference. Granby and Southwick are adjacent towns north of Hartford.

So "staying home" is arguably a fair statement.

And Storrs is a wee bit closer to Southwick than say a player who grows up in Eureka and decides to "stay home" in CA by going to UCLA. New England is one big happy home where everybody loves everybody else and Husky and Eagles fans live in peace and harmony.

Find it interesting that the WaPo has joined the NYT as major newspapers devoting significant column space and reporting time to WCBB - it may partly be driven by the MD 'local' connection as I suspect the NYT is by the Uconn 'local' connection, but ... It also sounds like the Chicago Trib is getting in the game based on a reporter asking questions in the news conferences today.

May seem 'small' to others, but I think it is a very positive sign for the women's game. When newspapers are cutting reporters left and right and relying more heavily on AP for their content, to devote personnel and travel expenses to the women's game is an interesting choice.

Just don't read the other Wa-Po article about the game. They give Maryland the edge in starting guards and the bench.

Oooh, ouch. But I think the rest of the country knows that the Washington DC area is not known for having the brightest bulbs anymore, if it ever was.

Eagles fans? Surely you must be referring to fans of the rock group? Otherwise, I'm unaware of any other significant number of Eagles fans anywhere in New England, particularly if you're referring to any which might reside inside the circumference of Route 128.

Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but Wa-Po was acquired by Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder/owner) recently. While everyone else is consolidating and bailing out of the newspaper biz, he wants to make a go of it, develop the online, but also strengthen the print version and enhance their position as a major national paper. I read that the employees were psyched (that was right after the acquisition - don't know about now).

I was really referring to my local high school team, which have the Eagles as the mascot, but I do think there was a BEagle fan who used to show up on the football and MCBB board a few years back, but maybe he passed from dyspepsia. As to the rock group, I'm guessing that they may have been better than ELO, though that's a pretty low marker.

The NYTimes has been covering the women's games because the Knicks have stunk... and their writers were crying about it. Let's see if it sticks.
