Nan's links today has an SI story on Uconn and the 'UPS Index' but surprisingly it does not have a link to the actual UPS Index so I went looking and here it is:

SI Story link:

The overall stats are interesting and there is a little description of the individual stats calculations. They seem pretty straight forward, but I do question the rebounding stat as it appears they are just calculating the % of total rebounds in a game that a team gets. This works well for a game where both teams are shooting the same or at least similar percentages but for most top teams where they average 45-50% shooting and hold opponents to 30-40% shooting the disparity between offensive and defensive opportunities for each team becomes more pronounced. With a general 35% chance of an offensive rebound vs. a 65% chance of a defensive rebound bad shooting teams are penalized for both their shooting percentage (in the offensive stat) and their lack of straight rebounding percentage. I think it would be easy enough for UPS to add in a little tweak to adjust for offensive percentage vs defensive percentage.
NB - this would actually hurt Uconn in this stat as they aren't great on a straight percentage basis and are shooting 50% vs. opponents at 31% so are getting the benefit of a weighting toward their defensive chances.
