I agree. Also, it's not like Uconn's #1 target to replace PP is just sitting around this season.
Things have to get really bad before PP is fired. It could happen, but I agree, not after one bad loss.

I think things are pretty bad when you lose to a FCS team after paying them $250,000

I'm a little weirded out that Jimmy Serranno and whaler11 posted exactly what I was going to say.

The goal is for UConn to have the best coach it can get for 2014. An AD running around like a chicken with its head cut off, or a crazy homeless person with a sandwichboard sign "THE END IS NEAR!!!!" doesn't attract good HC candidates. I guess if he went out, publicly undermined the football coach in front of the cameras, some of the fans would feel slightly less bad. If he fires PP now, the fans will feel better. But we might find out in another 2-3 years that Weist isn't the right guy, at the cost of missing out on the right up-and-coming guy. Are you willing to gamble on that right now in return for momentary satisfaction?

Who said Weist IS the right guy. And who's talking about 2-3 years. UConn football's gonna need a bigger boat. Name Brand, outstanding recruiter and offense oriented.

Weiss' offense scored 18 points against a FCS team so let's make him the HC??

Should be more criticism of him to be honest.

If it spirals the one thing we need to see is Whitmer gone. He can't play at this level.

You can't fire coaches mid season. What's the point? You can't hire anyone and it only puts the interim candidates in terrible positions.

Make Weist interim head coach? Ridiculously unfair to him and it puts him in an impossible spot.

Are you kidding?
Take off your sheet a hole or at least cut bigger holes so you can see we're not in 1960 Alabama...
He looks like Al Roker. Did not know observing that looking like somebody is a mind crime. If it were the 60s he wouldn't have the job, but since its 2013 he does and he is held to a standard of performance. Thus far, he sucks, whatever the race. Nice try.

It was our offensive center who was asking,"What the duck is going on? Why isn't this working?!" In the first half I might add. Read the story on the SB blog and see how many wiffed blocks are mentioned. It's the line coach, we still are confused 25 games in. That's not Weist's fault.

Today's blast from the past when Warde was eager to talk

UConn AD Confirms Paul Pasqualoni Will Return, But Wants To See Adjustments

December 04, 2012|
By DESMOND CONNER, dconner@courant.com,
The Hartford Courant

UConn athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed Tuesday that football coach Paul Pasqualoni will be back for a third season.

The Huskies wrapped up their second consecutive 5-7 season under Pasqualoni with a 34-17 loss Saturday to Cincinnati at Rentschler Field.

Manuel had a meeting Monday with Pasqualoni in which the two discussed the direction and future of the program. Manuel said he expects to see some adjustments next season, but would not discuss specifics of the meeting.

"It was a very good meeting. … Paul knew my decision, so it wasn't designed as an evaluation or anything," Manuel said. "There weren't any ultimatums or anything like that. I don't manage by threatening."

Manuel confirmed that the two talked about the coaching staff. He said he did not tell Pasqualoni to make any changes.

A source with knowledge of the meeting, however, said Manuel did suggest that someone other than offensive coordinator George DeLeone should call the plays next season.

The Huskies' offense has been dreadful the past two seasons. Personnel is an issue but trying to get that personnel to perform at Division I-A level was a chore and the national statistics bear out that fact: UConn was 109th out of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools in total offense.

"Paul is the leader of the team," Manuel said. "He's got to make the best decisions he feels from a staff standpoint, from a players standpoint. We had conversations in general about it, but I'm not going to dictate to my coaches who does what on the staff."

"I sit down and do the same thing with all my coaches after the season whether we're undefeated or we struggle but obviously, if we struggle, those conversations are a little bit more frequent," Manuel said.

"Look, I saw a team that played up and down, but played hard, never quit, wasn't lack of effort. As I said earlier in the season, we need to improve on the mistakes. Coaches need to make better decisions all around and put [the players] in better positions. Everybody has to improve. In my conversations with Paul, I know he's working on that. I know he understands what he needs to do to be better next season. So I totally expect we'll make the adjustments we need, that we'll recruit student-athletes that can come in and try to help us now where we need it, and that we'll develop the players that are coming back — all in an effort to ensure success on the field."

Manuel said he does not have any number of wins in mind that the Huskies must get next season. It is fair to say that his expectation for next season is to be in a bowl game?

"Yes," he said. "That's fair, sure, but to that point about managing, I don't want people operating under fear. Now, they should be operating under a strong expectation of success, but not fear — there's a difference."

The Huskies have come up a win shy of postseason eligibility each of the past two seasons. The Huskies' 2013 schedule is tougher than it was in 2012, especially in the non-conference portion because it includes Michigan and Maryland (Towson and Buffalo are also in the mix with the Huskies needing one more non-conference game).

If the Huskies don't go to a bowl game, then the reasons why they didn't go will be the focus, and that could produce one result. Pasqualoni's tenure could end three years into a five-year deal.

The other side of the UConn football equation is the frustrated fan base.

"I hear our fans and I understand their disappointment, but we're going to make the adjustments to have a better performance on the field than we had this year," Manuel said.

Give up the jihad dude... Few people on here care that WM isn't blowing smoke up the fans a$$es. Hollow words would mean nothing and probably just piss off more people.

I'm sure he's made his feelings known again where it counts.

Alrighty then, that should take care of it. More stern words to a chosen few, not the ever-shrinking season ticket base.

Who says the words have to be blowing smoke or hollow? "I've accepted Paul Pasqualoni's resignation" or "I've accepted George DeLeone's resignation, and Mike Foley will be our offensive line coach going forward" wouldn't be so hollow, would it?

BTW, this isn't 'hostility'. I think of it as accountability, especially for somebody who just got a $22,500 raise. I actually think he's done a decent job, and I think if he was king he would have canned PP after last season. But his silence in this instance, after he's been very quotable, is a fail, IMO.

PS there's plenty more in the archives, medic. You can look forward to a 10:30 p.m update every night until The Great Man speaks

Hey - you pay the same subscription fee here that I do... Post away.

I didn't catch the AD's of Oregon State, Kansas State, USF, etc... making public comments after their loses. Don't get me wrong Ruskin, the Towson game was downright disgusting and them tossing GDL would make me do the Randy Edsall Happy Dance throughout the Blue Lot, I just don't think you will hear what you are expecting/demanding to hear after one game. You're preaching to the wrong people - send your updates direct to WM w/ a cc to SH and the BOT.

Tell you what, medic. If Warde agrees to a pregame stroll/"listening tour" through the Rent parking lot the afternoon of Sept. 14 the "jihad" will end. This isn't preaching - it's a reminder the folks who gladly cash the checks people here write aren't listening.

He'd need a UConn version of the Popemobile.

I think ruskin's point is that manuel has been very vocal, very visible on issues surrounding the football team. He has not been a shrinking violet of an AD...until now.

I'm not sure of the other programs' AD's, but it is fair to question manuel based on his public statements. The clock just is a way to poke him a bit. But Manuel is a big boy, he knows the way the game that is played. This isn't buffalo.

As for what he could/should say? It's not our job to think of it for him. He has $475,000 ways to think of something.

Most are in agreement that deleone's make-work $275k position is money better spent on recruiting or marketing even. But at this point that's a band aid really.

Also, our chirping is something that is part and parcel of bcs football. Losing to mac and fcs teams just is not tolerated at this level. Regression even less so. Sadly, UConn has experienced pathetic results and now will pay the price in terms of fan enthusiasm, ticket sales, etc. A death spiral.

The thing that just absolutely floors me is that this song and dance played once already at syracuse, including with the same mediocre results and the same promotion/demotion of manuel's bff from oc to associate head coach. That is unacceptable. This isn't justabout the last three putrid years but a continuation of pasqualoni's mediocrity and in a manner so blatantly apparent to even casual observers.

You're absolutely right. This isn't Buffalo.

Warde's in over his head.

and there will be scores of coaches lined up to replace him

But what kind of coaches will be lined up? Will they be Great coaches or Good coaches? That is the million dollar question! We will see, but I'm not expecting a Jim or Geno. Not in the "AAC".

Your battleship reference is interesting. Agreed you shouldn't be able to turn one on a dime. But let's review how quickly Pasqualoni "turned it around" the wrong way!

We had just come off 4 straight "bowl game" seasons, including a BCS game. (While many say it was a fluke and we didn't deserve it, we did play in one. Granted we lost big, but by the same score that ND lost big to Bama.) We had beaten South Carolina the year before. etc. My point is we were on a nice trajectory and then we crashed and burned with PP at the wheel. Turning the "battleship" back around will probably take longer. It always takes longer to fix something you broke then to build it in the first place. However, the absolute wrong thing to do is delay the start of the work. I say if Maryland and Michigan are repeats of Towson, then good bye Pasqualoni.

The Kragthorpe years at LV were way worse than this. And they are a top 10 team again. We just have to get the right guy next time. It makes little difference to me whether or not P gets fired now or the day after the last game (unless we are convinced that TJ should be our next head coach). We just need to get the right guy.

The fact that you were so late to the party hurts your credibility here. Your avatar is a give away. Who hired TJ?

Late to what party? One of the things Warde needs to address is how much freedom TJ had the other night (horde to warde: what did you think of the playcalling? was it the change you expected?) It sure didn't look like TJ called 100 percent of the plays (eg going away what was working on the first TD drive). And GDL sidling along PP when offense was on the field can't be what Warde envisioned when he bought in TJ. It's a bad visual and doesn't convey change - almost bad as the visual of GDL talking to an offensive line who weren't buying what he was selling. If Warde trusted the Sunshine Boys after what they tried to pull off at Syracuse in 2004 then that is 100 percent on him.

Sucks to be Warde right now. Enthusiasm to buy tickets may be at a historic low for most sports. But at least P is making one decision easy for him. Hopefully basketball will have a big year and we can have something to point to.

Right now may be a good time to pretend we don't have a football program.
