Walz picked up an idea during his Team USA coaching stint over the last month, when he assisted the Americans throughout an undefeated run to the FIBA U19 World Championship in Russia.

A gold medal in hand, Walz on Friday suggested the early timeout as a way to take advantage of the NCAA's rules changes for women's basketball.

As with in the international game, college teams will play four 10-minute quarters starting this season. The first team timeout of a quarter – if taken before the five-minute mark -- counts as the only media break per period.

"We're really going to focus on making sure that we're in great shape," Walz said. "You could really sit here the first minute of a game, call a timeout, and all of a sudden you're playing nine minutes without a media timeout.

"…You're going to find out who's in shape – whose team can sustain for seven or eight minutes, where in the past, within a nine-minute stretch you're getting two media timeouts which are a minute and a half long."

Interesting. Louisville has never impressed me as a team in particularly great shape, though maybe my impressions were influenced by Shoni. We'll see.

Makes Dawn Staley's hiring of a Conditioning coach look even smarter.

Hmmm. In the past, Geno has very rarely used anything besides the "use it or lose it" timeout in the first half. I wonder if he will use a strategically placed timeout to force a less conditioned opposing team to either play for a long stretch or burn some of their timeouts.
