Walking??

As far as calls for walking anyone who watches a pro basketball game over at least the last 10 years or more will easily see that walking calls in the NBA or WNBA are practically non-existent except for what I call the "stutter-step" where a player shuffles their feet before moving from a stationary position with the ball. Refs in college games are still calling walking but in time sure that college will be following the pros. As far as palming, that is one that in all my way too many years of diligent viewing I cannot remember being called in a game. Must have missed the one against Nika. Anyway, it seems it has almost disappeared from the rule book.

I know what I am talking about. When a basket is scored, the inbounding player is allowed to run the baseline. After a foul, a player is allowed only to move forward or back but not sideways. I officiated enough games to know. Take your own advice.
 
With apologies to Monte for more hijacking of his original post , I have another question regarding rules for inbounding after a made shot.

Sometimes the ref hands the ball to the inbounding player, and sometimes the player just takes the ball and inbounds it without the ref ever touching it.

Can anyone explain the rules about this?
 
Not sure if this answers your question, cabbie, but I found this on quick search (might be NBA specific?)
"On a scoring play, this is considered a live ball. Any player from the inbounding team can grab the ball and inbound it immediately. So if two offensive players fall down or are celebrating, you can catch them off guard with a quick inbounds.

Every other out of bounds play is considered a dead ball. The official has to retrieve the ball, make sure no one is at the scorers table for substitutions, allow everyone to be set (let a player who fell into the crowd get back on the court), and then hand the ball to the inbounder to start the 5 second count."

the inbounder gets one step, more is a violation …. 6 feet would be a big step!

How about if we make a $10,000 debt, with the proceeds going to UConn athletics? If you ever officiated a game, I feel bad for the players who had to endure a referee who didn’t know the rules.
 
That is completely incorrect. There is a designated area that is 3 feet wide, and the player only has to keep part of 1 foot within that area. Thus they could take an infinite number of steps if they were small ones. If a player puts the edge of his right foot on the left edge of the area and then moves over to have his left foot on the right edge of the area, it would be easy to move approximately 6 feet and keep a part of his foot within the designated area.

The verbal “hold your spot” refers to a general area within which they can move with impunity. The refs assume the players know the rules better than do some of the people on the Boneyard.

That’s moving the old pivot foot, which is a traveling violation
