Interesting that W&M is making the move to a private northeastern conference. Perhaps because of the academic reputations. I wonder of Nova is considering the move too, joining Georgetown, Holy Cross, Fordham.

So W&M is only moving football to the Patriot but keeping other sports in the CAA. That is very strange. I've read many times a program has to play it its main conference if the sport is sponsored there.

Football Scoop should know it is now the Coastal Athletic Association.

The CAA is a bit odd in that its football conference is essentially a separate entity. That being said I imagine W&M still had to jump through some hoops to make this happen.

Either they don’t want to be the ones with fingers pointed at them if/when the conference folds as its core steadily migrates, they’re holding out hope for an A10 invite as other conference dominoes fall, or they really just think the Patriot is too barren for other sports.

Like anything, probably a little bit of all 3.

The Patriot League is pretty bad at most of its sports and I'm not sure the schools care too much. I'd look for Villanova to make the move to the Patriot League in football soon. But there's no way that Villanova or Georgetown would join the Patriot for other sports as long as they'd have to bring basketball. That means the Patriot League won't be good enough to entice Richmond to leave the A10 yet either.

W&M is, however, one of the few men's basketball teams to never make the NCAA tournament so it's not like they would be giving up a lot if they left the CAA (although they may be making more money?).

The Patriot is already decent and could put together a strong lax league if some of their associate teams like Richmond, Georgetown (and assuming Villanova) could join, but I don't think they can (or would).

Villanova should exit the CAA if it can find a place in the Patriot.

@Zissou - what say you?

-> The Patriot League’s membership within the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) expands to 10 teams with the addition of Villanova. They join charter members Bucknell University, Colgate University, The College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College and Lehigh University, along with associate members Fordham University, Georgetown University, University of Richmond and William & Mary. <-

I think its pretty awesome. A mix of great and super great academic schools and all in the same region. Fun.

Been rumored for awhile. CAA football is really odd right now.

12 football teams are left but they almost completely divided geographically:
North: New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Bryant, Albany, Monmouth, Stony Brook
Central: Towson (the entire Mid Atlantic wing disappeared)
South: Hampton, Elon, Campbell, NC A&T

America East should start sponsoring football and look to add Stony Brook for all sports and URI for football (or all sports frankly, as the A-10 is now a bloated shell of a once-great conference). CAA can focus more mid and south Atlantic.

Would love to see URI, Maine and UNH jump ship. Stick a fork in the CAA.

Once JMU and UMass left, things got weird.

Should end anyone floating the idea of Villanova going FBS

AE has only 4 FB schools, so they'd have to add at least 2 permanent or associate members. And with the number of schools changing conferences these days, I dont know you want to be starting a sports with 6 members. FB is still too important to get caught scrambling for new members to maintain conference eligibility.

The Patriot and Ivy Leagues could combine to create one large fbs football conference

  • "On July 1, 2022, Stony Brook University left (America East) to join the all-sports Colonial Athletic Association (now the Coastal Athletic Association); it had been a member of the CAA's technically separate football arm, CAA Football, since 2013. Then-current field hockey associate Monmouth left to join the CAA, which sponsors that sport.[6][7]"

Didn't exactly go so well for them lol. Silly to split up the D1 SUNY focus schools (except Buffalo I guess) anyhow.

Nice symmetry in Patriot -- 10 teams in all major sports
5 all-sports schools (HC, Colg, Buck, Leh, Lafa)
5 all except FB (Army, Navy, BU, Loyola, American)
5 FB only (Fordham, Villanova, Gtown, Rich, W+M)
