Vitale Blames Sneaker Companys

DV's stance would be similar to a friend of a local drug dealer blaming his friend's criminal activity and subsequent arrest on a drug cartel.

Are the sneaker companies at fault?. Yes.

Does their culpability absolve all other participants? Hell no!

Looks like he called this one correctly. Has he made statements about Duke and which players? How about Kentucky?
 
Kansas is a very big one and if this is truly going to cause seismic change there needs to be more than a few like Kansas. It just seems unfathomable with this going on that Kentucky could keep landing the classes they've landed without a similar scheme.

It is too late, not to mention transparently hypocritical, for anyone sitting in a president’s chair to bemoan the incomprehensible wealth flowing through college sports. The presidents signed off on it years ago, allowing companies like Nike and Adidas to “supplement” their football and basketball coaches’ salaries. Alabama football coach Nick Saban, for example, has an eight-year, $65 million contract with an annual base salary of $245,000. He also has an annual “talent fee” of roughly $6.5 million, which comes from various places, but draws heavily from the money Nike gives the school.

You paying attention? It's possible that Nike pays Nick Saban more to coach Alabama than Alabama pays him to coach Alabama.

According to freescooter football isn't important to these companies. I guess Nike gives away money for entertainment value.

He has only said that he believes they do things on a "smaller" scale and really hasn't mentioned Duke at all. He has indicated that he knows people linked to this specific case. Maybe Kentucky and Duke are tied in with different people, because they have to be doing something to have two deep rosters consisting of 5 star players.
 
While Ricky denies any knowledge word on the street is that he is the person currently identified as 'coach 2' by the FBI.

Pitino is never going to admit anything unless its to save his arse on the witness stand ala the restaurant sex extortion fiasco. He will deny deny & deny to save his $ and perceived legacy. He's been so successful at selling snake oil his entire life that there will always be sycophants that believe in his cult of personality. Meanwhile plenty more understand that he's been a BS artist from day 1 and that hasn't and will never change.
 
I know this is not possible but why can't the rules be changed so that all schools have a limit or get the same money from the companies? Your big programs would get less but this way it's not quite as much like bribery. It's such an unfair advantage for a school over others less fortunate. There will always be ways around things but it's worth a try.

This article on ESPN.com echos everything you said. Pitino has always been a sleezy salesman who finally did too much to talk his way out of.

"There's no one in this business with more integrity than Rick Pitino," the one and only said back then.

Look where all that integrity got him.

How far does this investigation go before they find out the NCAA itself was complicit? Way, way, way too much money out there for the NCAA not to have it's hand in the cookie jar.

Even that mostly negatively article fawns over his coaching successes 'Pitino was as good a basketball coach as there was on the planet, college or pro"!? Ah no, there are a few folks in Boston that disagree with that. His gimmicky short term success with Knicks included (90-74 certainly not best on planet) his NBA record stands at 192-220. There are better coaches in both college and almost every coach in the NBA is better. Arguably Pitino's college success was dependent upon the cheating & snake oil sales. When he tried the Rick Pitino cult-hero schtick in Boston without a rigged system he failed miserably, blamed others & outside forces (the draft), changed his mind constantly yet never changed his methods and was exposed as an extremely poor manager whose only useless trick was selling the greatness of Rick Pitino.
 
Of course Vitale would blame the shoe companies. Now 30 years ago, when these shoe companies were doing the same things, nobody said a word. Now? Oh the shoe companies are bad for the game of basketball. Jeez.
 
Any chance some of these cases involve recorded wiretaps that prove who was involved?

You realize that this would be a de facto reward for the P5 dead weight and would bone Connecticut that has a pretty decent deal with Nike, right?

Coach gets caught arranging payoff for recruit using a shoe compnay as the middleman. Shoe company to blame?

JC went to the compliance department to report the Nate Miles situation. Of course the compliance department was Jeff Hathaway. He got rid of the staff. It is obvious to many of us now, as opposed to when that incident occurred, Jeff, like Emmert, had a grudge against JC and threw him under the bus. Any reasonable AD would have understood JC was not in league with Nochimson because he cheated Rip just prior to this incident.

The NCAA got JC on a technicality (an issue since changed) over the numbers of contacts made with Miles. They dismissed the argument the staff made that they kept contacting Nate to stay away from Nochimson. If Emmert wasn't already biased against UConn and JC they might have given JC some slack but Hathaway made the statement he never saw JC recruit a player harder than Miles. Of course Hathaway stayed away from JC because they hated one another so he would have no clue to support his statement.

IMO Vitale's defense was at best minimal. Jay Bilas was more aware of the issues and presented salient points to refute the APR ruling.
