It's a 4-1 series, but Liberty's home game is first (2020). Not sure why VT would go for this.

Liberty goes to Va Tech first, then the announced series.
The five-game series gives Liberty a total of six future matchups against Virginia Tech, including the previously announced game in Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 5, 2020.

Good for Liberty. Maybe after a few years up we can schedule them and have a real holy war.

Its not like its a home and home. They are getting 4 home games to Liberty's 1. They'll also represent as well or better than Liberty on the road, so not much downside unless Liberty gets nationally competitive in a hurry. Penn State used to schedule 3-1 and 4-1 deals with Temple back in the day so I can relate to this scheduling by VPI as it feels similar.

Liberty goes full FBS in 2019, so this makes sense as a measure to build momentum, etc. Great get by their AD.

Notice that all the crazy religious schools (ND/BYU/Liberty) are Independent? Too holier than thou to join a conference...

Those games in Lynchburg won't be like a VT road game. All that will do is reduce the commute for the convoys that drive to the VT home games from Richmond, Tidewater, and Northern Virginia by 90 minutes. Liberty may have a larger stadium by then, and it will sell out for that game. The VT team won't feel like it is on the road.

By the way VT has also scheduled road games at Old Dominion. VT will use these games in Norfolk and Lynchburg to showcase the team around the state for recruits. Old Dominion and Liberty will use them to sell tickets.

Liberty has very nice athletic facilities and the football stadium is easily expandable. It is in a great location and many VT fans won't have to drive to the sticks (i.e. Blacksburg) for the game. Excellent scheduling by both VT and Liberty. A clear sell-out.
