Ohio State has Thad Matta. They don't want a coach. UT just hired Smart. Alabama has the money...and Wright is certainly an upgrade...do you think that happens? No. Penn State? I really doubt it. Wright is from PA, so it is the best bet I could see, and yet he knows nobody has ever won there. Jay Wright is not likely to take a big payday at a school with no Basketball bona-fides. The schools with both $$ and basketball bona-fides don't need coaches, except, as I mentioned, Louisville and maybe UNC or Duke (K is 69!) in a couple of years.

The big money P5 school has to be willing to spend big money on a basketball coach, and most of them won't.
You can justify what you want..I'm just going off of the word of a man who is a Nova grad and has donated some significant $$ over the past 35-40 years to Nova athletics specifically basketball. And at the end of the day others here are right..nobody will match the NBA..case in point: Your own example of Brad Stevens

NO WAY HE LEAVES FOR THE SUNS. PERIOD.

The average tenure for an NBA coach is ~2.5 years, and that is heavily influenced by Popovich. No matter what they offer, he'd have to go in knowing he's unemployed in 2 - 3 years and looking for a new home.

He's the toast of the town (Philly is a pro town, and all of their teams are all in rebuild mode). He's working in the area he was born and raised. Having won a NC at a school (technically, he's coached 2 NC teams) he's been at for 2 decades means he is guaranteed employment for life. He doesn't have to uproot his family or deal with the so-called "professional" athletes and their agents. He's set. He's making millions now and will make more regardless (salary, endorsements, media appearances, a book in the waiting, etc.). IMO, it's not about (more) money for a guy like this, it's about commitment, loyalty, and the knowledge that you are where you want to be, doing what you want to do. No one should throw that away for a few more shekels - he's too smart to get fooled that way.

Would UConn be better off in the Big East and play football as an independent?

Please, not again. NO, NO, NO, and NO. What don't people understand about going independent ? We are having a problem scheduling as it is now.

Villanova hoops is a lot more profitable than most P5 basketball programs.

No, it's not.

They also have football bleeding a very small athletic program dry - they're in no position to start throwing extra millions at Jay Wright without enduring significant pain.

Well, Warde is not around anymore, so who are they going to threaten to fire if he can't put an independent schedule together.
