Villanova Scouting Report

"Former Kentucky, Texas, California, and Long Beach State guard" -- Can you imagine reading that 10 years ago?

What are the chances that guy’s getting a degree at the end of this semester and is it even possible they are higher than 0%?

Edit: I suppose if it’s his fifth year then they’re definitely higher than 0%.

Edit edit: I just looked him up and it turns out it’s his sixth year so forget this example cuz he better have or be about to have at least a bachelor’s by now, but take my point.

I’m so stoked for this game - hoping the forecast doesn’t change in such a way that would dissuade me from driving to Hartford.

I’m envisioning our guys showing off their full potential as a team for the first time this year and a positive post-game thread for the ages afterwards. We survived a few close calls, and now we’ve had a week to prepare for a good team representing an excellent program that’s mounting its own comeback story. Let’s get loud and put them down hard!

Thanks for the summary. The Acadien Lewis factor will be interesting to watch since we were on his short list before he committed to UK. He should be ready for this one. He would likely have been a better option at backup PG than Smith, if he was willing.

Don't think he was willing was the issue. Hence why he bailed on UK after they got Lowe. Regardless, I really like Lewis' game, and he would've been great here. I was hoping for a Lewis/Mullins combo from that recruiting cycle.

Things have been pretty smooth sailing at home in the BE and pretty rocky on the road. Glad to have this one at home right now

The Wisconsin and Seton Hall wins are good wins. They’ve been looking for a GREAT win. Here is one of their few remaining chances

I’m sure UConn won’t deviate from what’s been working offensively. But if Tarris can get Brennan in foul trouble, I think it’s game over immediately. Go feast, Tarris

Nova’s 1-3 are 6’2, 6’3, 6’4. Ours are 6’5, 6’3, 6’6. Looking for a big game from at least 1 of them

They really don't have much behind Brennan. I'd go right at him both with Tarris and then with dribble drives.

Getting Brennan in foul trouble will open up our game like playaction opens up a good football team’s passing.

We can dump it to Tarris with impunity or have him kick it out for catch and 3.

Defensively we need perimeter D on display and things gonna be awry!

Smith can barely make a free throw. I like Lewis a lot more with the ball than Smith.
I’ll take a veteran guard shooting over 40% from 3, which is in line with his career numbers, ands shooting 52% from FT line over a 34 shot sample that is completely anomalous to his career FT #s .

In a sea of bad takes, this is one of your worst

despite all the recent Solo criticisms he still somehow our leading scorer...

Lewis is a multi year player. We could have him for 4 year potentially. Think before you look to offend. There is a reason Smith’s minutes are shrinking.

So you think Lewis would have come here knowing he would be behind Silas this year and next?

Impossible for us to know. It was a hypothetical. Kid is likely winning BE ROY. Yet not really an NBA profile.

Not hypothetical. A 5 star wasn't coming here to come off the bench for 2 years. Nice try though...

A - he wasn't a 5 star, he was a 4 star. He was generally in that 35 range.
B - if the kid was afforded 15-20 minutes, and had the chance to win a title, who knows. He certainly wasn't coming here with Smith here. You're probably right no this one, just saying he would have been a nice get to season up as a future PG, a position we have a hard time with. I guess we can always portal him over......

what about a PG shooting 53% from the FT line? To me, that's a much bigger wart than a poor 3 pt %.
Especially when the last thing we look from Smith is 3 pt shooting. There are no expectations for him to fill it up from 3.

We are talking in a Scouting Report thread for a game happening tomorrow. What Lewis brings next year and beyond is not relevant to the thread. Now if you’re talking overall value to a team, then yes, Lewis.

True, but does it deserve it's own thread? It's a subtopic comes up, is it that thread egregious to carry on a mildly relative side topic?

If Tarris does his job tomorrow, we don't let Lindsey torch us, we win by double digits.

That would not inspire the friar faithful…..gotta think they can get someone better than him
Miami OH coach? I tend to think the first place you look is seeing which coaches have elevated their mid major.

Game makes me nervous but hopefully they do to Nova what they used to do to UConn during the dark days. There is a 80-60 type game etched in my mind from years ago.
And if I remember correctly it was only that close because Jay Wright was being a nice guy and called off the dogs early. Think it was a 20 point deficit at the half.

I had the same thought but I doubt a 4-star would want to be a backup. Who could blame him? You would think Smith's experience would trump Lewis' talent in the short term but that only goes so far. Did Lewis commit to UK before or after we signed Silas? I think it was after, which makes it pretty clear. On the plus side, I don't think anyone is second guessing signing Silas at this point.

The guy I am really curious about is Darius Adams who we already had in the fold but he decommitted when we signed Smith. Not sure Adams could have helped us as a backup PG though. We are pretty deep at the 2-3 spots.

If I am reading the report correctly and Nova does 4 out offensive sets, this will be a big game for Solo defensively. His biggest weakness defensively is keeping his man in front of him.
That's everyone's biggest weakness. Sometimes it is a strategy to funnel the ball handler toward our shot blockers, but when we don't rotate, we give up offensive rebounds and easy put backs. Ross for all his athleticism seems to lets smaller guys get past him and hopes he can block them from behind. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.

I think Stewart and Mullins are getting better, but so is Ball, IMO. It is something we all need to work on.

Silas may be our best perimeter defender but even he has trouble keeping guys in front some time. It isn't easy to do.

Smith is a pretty good at applying ball pressure, but he really struggles to keep guys in front of him.
