Villanova post game thread

Why not just beat them in the final to jump them? If we both win tonight, committee could have a 7 seed reserved for the winner. So not only are you the BET Champ, you're also the 7 seed champ!

I'm all for Marquette winning - StJ is our kryptonite.
If they beat St. Johns tonight, I'm not sure we can jump them. That would help their resume more than us beating Creighton. You would think beating them 3 times would help, but not sure it would.

And yet you don't come out of that game last night thinking we're gelling?

I feel pretty darn good about this team but opponents get tougher from here on out.
If our defense becomes our strength, color me surprised. For whatever reason, Stew becomes Dennis Rodman when he defends Dixon. I do love that, just wondering how replicable that will be. We definitely defended well, but Nova and their hero ball gameplan helped. I'd be much more comfortable if we found the offensive flow we had earlier in the year against teams like Gonzaga, where had Liam being a creator that found the open man. Right now it's so hard to rely on Hass - when you see him live you realize how partial he is physically.

Let's not forget we were losing yesterday through the 9 minute mark of the second half, until the bottom fell out for Nova and they were Neptuned. We have another game to build off tonight against a tourney team, hoping for a crisp well executed game.

Don't care. I want St. Johns to lose. I do not want them to have any chance at a BET championship.

I have a hard time thinking the committee keeps a team we beat 3x ahead of us in the seedings, while beating them in the BET championship on the eve of the bracket release. That just doesn't smell right. I'd much rather roll the dice with the scenario of beating Marquette in the finals than having to play StJ in the finals. I could see a scenario where we both get 7s in that case vs getting a 7 by losing to StJ in the finals.

Playing St Johns in a championship game would be great for us even in defeat. It's all a moot point win tonight then we worry about who we face.

.-.
Nice win, ugly game. Nova was 5-32 from the floor outside of Poplar. Nova offense was a bunch of iso and Dixon was absolutely awful forcing up all kinds of low quality shots. They had 5 assists. Our D played well. AK had a really nice game, valuable minutes from Mahaney. Liam looks like he needs a sports therapist. Hass looks broken physically. A nice win but not one that gives you goosebumps around tourney potential. We are going to need Mahaney.

Nova fans can’t wait to find a real coach. Neptune looks like a maitre d on the sideline with the skinny pants, turtle neck and blazer look.
Am I remembering wrong but didn’t Dixon have a post up game at one time? He also didn’t play a lick of defense

Agree.
During one of the networks second half In the Huddle timeouts, Hurley didn’t voice any frustration or urgency but praised the players on how well they were playing, to push Poplar to his left and that they will be fine once they got ‘over the hump’.
The players did just that.

It's so valuable having a coach and players that have won big in March and won't panic in these spots. Although it is a little annoying that once again Danny Hurley couldn't win a close game.

Yes! He totally abandoned any form of offense other than jacking up jumpers. In the past, when he couldn't hit from outside, he'd typically bring it in and work around the paint. He was god awful on both ends of the floor last night - played losing basketball all over the place. Weird way for him to go out. When he stunk in the first half, thought he might come out and go on a tear in the second (as also had the Nova scoring record on the line), and was even worse. Credit our d for sure, but a lot of that had to do with lot's of bad decision making from him.

You're still on this?
As long as the fallacy keeps being committed I will keep knocking it down!
If one person understands the point and saves themselves ruin at Vegas as a result, I will be happy.

That run we went on in the second half was pretty reminiscent of the runs we would go on last year. Really good to see clutch AK and strong games from Mahaney, Samson, and Stew
THIS. So true. And of the last 5 wins, 4 have been by double digits. Let’s make it 5 tonight!

Excellent point. I was at MSG during that drubbing, and a win over St. John's at The Garden for the Big East crown would be epic.
Yep, was at both the St Johns semi and Marquette final last year. Obviously St Johns was a more exciting game, but the crowd also was just insane. UConn-Johnnies final at MSG would feed families.

Yesterday you panicked that there may be no movement on the 7 line as a few teams won. Now you think they is room for BOTH UConn and Marquette?

Still not convinced there will be room, but Kansas lost and Marquette sitting there as the last 7. Win win is beating Marquette in finals in my eye. Had said all along we’d need to win 3 to guarantee 7, never cared about Marquette. View really doesn’t differ.

He has skills. But he never puts 2 good games in a row this season. He can change that. I know many have written him off, but the book isn't finished on him.
I was one of them, but he’s making me a believer again! I would love to say I was wrong!

There is no such thing ”law” that says if you miss lots of shots you will make lots of shots later.
It’s called the law of averages. But it’s not theory, it is a basic math principle.

I will continue to go through life understanding that unsustainable shooting percentages are not normally sustained.

Hasn’t the removal of the tape on his shoulder more or less coincided with his resurgence lately?
I thought you might be on to something so I went back and checked. He only had the tape on his shoulder for the February 23 game against St. John's (17 points, 3-6 from three, but the 6 turnovers when it looked like he had fumblitis) and the February 26 game against Georgetown (13 points, 1-5 from three). So who knows if the shoulder bothered him before the St. John's game because he was on a bad streak before that.

Since the Georgetown game there have been 4 games - @ Providence, Marquette, Seton Hall and Villanova last night. In those 4 games he's 22-43 from the field, 12-21 from three, and 17.5 ppg.

That's how he plays now because Neptune runs no offense but the credit is to our defense. He was 11-48 against us in three games this season.

St Johns: 17.5 PPG on 30.6%
Creighton: 22 PPG on 48.4%
Xavier: 21 PPG on 43.8%
Marquette: 20.5 PPG on 42.4%
GTown: 26.5 PPG on 42.9%
Providence: 19 PPG on 41.9%
Butler: 31 PPG on 58.5% (lol)
DePaul: 19.5 PPG on 41.9%
Seton Hall: 25.3 PPG on 42.9%

UConn: 16 PPG on 22.9%. We clamped him up

I'm not sure what his NBA draft stock is, but I feel like a 23 PPG scorer who can iso, come off screens, bang in the post, and take guys off the dribble should DEFINITELY get picked up in the league, even if he is a 5th year. Just has to hope he never sees Jaylin Stewart in the league :)

Did the ball hit Neptune's jacket in the first half? He was on the court, right?

A day later and I still can't believe UConn held Villanova to only 20 pts. in the 2nd half.

Have surgery today so only saw a few minutes into the 2nd half. Darn double OT lead in game. Heckuva 2nd half performance, though.

it looks like a lot of the team are gelling at the right time, and defense is improving. Absent the atrocious 3 point shooting in the first 15 minutes and some questionable work by the officials on hand check fouls by ‘Nova this could have been a 30 point blowout.

On to Creighton! (Who should be a bit leg weary)
Hope you heal up fast and completely!

It depends in the type of team UConn is playing which center will have the greater impact. Reid against Creighton may be the guy.

Reed just a bit lost on a few defensive plays. UConn was doing a lot of rotating because of Dixon and Reed was a bit slow at times (maybe three or four times). He was still good on the boards and solid offensively (IMO). I agree he will be needed against Kalkbrenner.
