We didn’t. Diaco just chose to create a rivalry with them because they were the one team we beat the season before. He would have done that with anyone. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

He was lucky we beat UCF. He would have struggled to come up with another name. Then again, maybe not, since he’s nuts.

Unless very unique circumstances exist ---- like two already-rival schools that started new football programs and thus naturally gravitate toward a rivalry in the flagship college sport ---- then it's pointless to chase a rivalry that didn't already exist since WW2. I see now why everyone makes fun of the civil conflict. i just learned about it in recent years and literaly LOL'd when i read about the circumstances surrounding its creation and ultimate non-acknowledgement by UCF and subsequent demise.

You know what, though? UCF secretly LOVES the ConFLiCT. They tell people they have it and I bet they do. Then they deny they took it. They are kind of like a 13 year old who is “too big” to care about a kids show but then turns it on the minute the “little kids” go out to play. LOL

At least Diaco picked a worthy rival. They had a few nice years. No idea what they’ve done since we left the AAC.
 
Diaco, for all his weirdness, ended up being right about a couple things. He was the first that I know of to suggest playing games on Nickelodeon, which the NFL would go on to start doing shortly after. And I think he did successfully meme our way into a rivalry with UCF. His antics got his mediocre teams juiced up enough to beat UCF twice after starting it, and then with all the contention about accepting or not accepting the trophy, it feels real enough to me. I hope we continue to play them and they should be our rivalry game should we be admitted to the Big 12

On the other hand, he couldn't manage to get a play off at the end of the the Navy game so...
