VIDEO: Geno Auriemma Pregame Zoom - Xavier

Why does Geno have to answer questions about the football team? I to hear about Xavier prep and how practice has gone. Sigh
I agree. There was no true UCONN WBB dialogue until minute 19:00 (practice
focus for this week), and only at minute 21 did we hear some nice comments
about KK, at minute 23 we hear somethings about Jana, and at minute 26 about Paige and the National Team invitation. Finally, there was a confirmation that ICE will not be playing on Sun or Tues. If you really like BIG EAST LEAGUE STUFF (the
20 game Big East schedule requirement and how Geno sees it affecting the
team ... think we have heard these views before) etc. If you like this sort of
Q and A, start at the beginning.
Everything is somewhat interesting, but somewhat
different than a usual pre-game Presser. I look forward to SUNDAY and
Tuesday... let the games begin.

If this was Ohio or Texas or a billion other Power Conference Universities would it seem strange the a basketball coach got asked about an unanticipated football coach change. No, and it shouldn't. First, in the Athletic Deptartment they support each other and football pays a lot of the bills. Geno shows a keen interest in the health of other teams at UConn.

Geno on the Big East as effecting the chances for making the Final Four: " You are either good enough or you're not". He further stated that there are a lot of teams in the Power 4 conferences that have never been to the FF, so the conference schedule didn't help them. He also pointed out that the AAC was a much weaker women's basketball league than the BE and they won several NCs while there. So Geno apparently agrees with those here on the BY who say it doesn't make a difference. He did however not sound thrilled with the extra 2 conference games.

Come on, he was doing his best to put a positive spin on the situation of being a prisoner of the BE. He'd be first in line to get into a P4. Competitors live for competition. Gotta read between the lines. Geno is a master with the media. Remember, CD even lauds him for it.

Yes, he was not thrilled. 2 less opportunities for more testing OOC games.

I was surprised by two of Geno's comments in this video call:

1. He disparaged the value of playing top teams during the regular season, and specifically said that the losses last year to Tennessee, Notre Dame, and Southern Cal did not help the team to win the National Championship. Really? I thought that everyone agreed that the Tennessee loss in particular was a "come to Jesus" moment for the team that brought focus to all the subsequent practices last spring. I wonder if Geno really believes that the loss had no value, and playing a weaker opponent would have been just as useful.

2. He said that additional travel in the non-conference schedule (such as for a Thanksgiving tournament) and even European trips in the summer every four years will not be financially feasible unless some external party such as a tournament sponsor pays the travel expenses. He didn't really explain this statement, but the impression I got was that every nickel at the team's disposal was directed at NIL payments to players, so travel funds aren't really available from internal resources. If so, this would be quite ironic -- the NIL revolution is now enriching players but impoverishing the programs that they play for, to the extent that they can't afford to travel as much as they have in the past. I wonder if the players themselves consider this a worthwhile trade-off.
