Forget to mention my Dad - WW2, Clark AB, the Philippines, B-24 squadron. He had medals from air combat over Borneo as I recall, but he generally never spoke about the whole experience.

My salute to all of you who served and supported the military, but especially those of you who spent time in the line of fire. I had the privilege of sharing office space with two Lt Colonels who were veterans of the Chosin Reservoir.

Army Security Agency 1964-68. Dad was in the Solomon Islands Guadalcanal in WW2.

Basic training at Fort Gordon, late August through October, 1962, including the most dangerous thirteen days in the history of what is ludicrously referred to as civilization. Still remember all the military transports overhead heading south, the intercoms in the PX and EM club ordering soldiers to report to their various units.
On a more personal level, I also remember setting what undoubtedly would have been a world record for the standing broad jump, when I encountered a rattlesnake on the night compass course. If only Guinness had been there. Or preferably Jameson, as I could have done with a shot or two.

Yes, there were definitely places in the Fort Gordon “training areas” that made you feel that wearing those heavy old combat boots wasn’t such a bad idea.
