Great article. Interesting opening -

Justine Pissott didn’t even know what exactly Vanderbilt was when she hopped on a video call with Shea Ralph and her assistant coaches. She’d heard of the school’s academic reputation, but she felt like she owed a favor to assistant coach Kevin DeMille, who began recruiting her when she was 13.​

It got me thinking, and of course doing the googling. So if this was 9 years ago, was DeMille at GW under Rizzotti at that time? Joined VU in 2021 (5 years ago), and spent 5 years at GWU, so is that math mathing?

Pissott is 21. De Mille was at GW 5 years and Vandy 5. The goes back to when she was 11, right? Could’ve been recruiting her for GW when she was 13.
 
I've been impressed with Vandy over the last few weeks wrt closing out close games, except for GA, of course. If memory serves, there were a few like this last season where they just couldn't hold onto the win, or come up with a win. Go Dores!
 
Top 5 program NATIONALLY, and I think they will sweep the SEC awards. POY-Blakes, COY-Shea Ralph, FOY-Aubrey Galvin

Guessing FOY goes to Chavez but Galvan has hands down had the better SEC season. In SEC play she's averaging 14.5 points, 5.3 assists on 45.5% FG shooting. Chavez is averaging 18.0 ppg, 4.1 assists on 34.7% FG shooting.

Yikes. That's a tight race. Considering how Vandy's season has gone, could that tip the scale in Galvan's favour?
 
Also regarding Mikayla Blakes, she should be a lock for SEC POY and she might be overtaking Sarah Strong for NPOY favorite at this point. Individually she's had one of the best SEC seasons of all time. In conference play she's averaged 30.5 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.3 steals on shooting splits of 46.8/39.8/89.6 while leading Vanderbilt to a 13-3 record, finishing in 2nd place after they were predicted to finish 7th in the preseason.
 
I'm sorry. Strong is the better player and it's not really an argument. I like Blakes a ton and agree she is SECPOY by a lot.

POY isn't equivalent to who is the best player, it's who had the best season. I doubt you'll find many people argue that Blakes is a better overall player than Sarah Strong, but Blakes definitely has a case for having the best individual season in 2025-26.

Came here to say this and you beat me to it.

Some, myself included, think Strong might end up as the best to ever play at UConn, and if part of Blakes’ case is how Vanderbilt has overachieved, it’s obviously much harder to do that at UConn.

If Blakes wins NPOY it’s a matter of her just taking it rather than Strong doing anything to lose it.

Possibly? I feel like FOY honors are often stats focused and team success is a lower priority. That said, I'd definitely choose Galvan if we're looking at SEC only, especially considering how well she's played in big games. Chavez has more points per game but shooting at 34.6% from the field is awful efficiency and negates some of her big scoring IMO.
 
When Shea Ralph said of her team/players "We're going to be women of God," (on the We Need to Talk Now podcast), I thought you won't hear that from Geno. I had not heard her say that before. Wonder what she meant.

Great stuff from coach Ralph as always, but also terrific responses from Mikayla Blakes and Justine Pissott on their relationships with their coach and what it means to them.

The emotional bond between Ralph and her players, as well as to Vanderbilt and its AD, are impressively strong.
 
Congrats to Shea!!

Well deserved, surely more accolades to come in her head coaching career. Vandy seems to have been the perfect landing place. Looking forward to seeing Vandy continue to rise and compete at the highest levels.
