It is amazing how complimentary the seasons of our two most played freshman has become.

In looking at their play since January, the season can be broken down into 2 groups of 6 games each.

In the first 6 game group, against Memphis, UCF, Temple, Georgetown, Smu and ECU, Vance Jackson looked like he was figuring things out. He was in double digits in 5 of the six games, averaging 11.3 points on 53% shooting from the field while going 14 for 25 (that’s 56%) from beyond the arc. Throw in over 4 rebounds a game, 8 assists to 8 turn overs, and he was becoming a real weapon.

In that same 6 games stretch CV was struggling with his game. He was averaging 5.3 points per game on 32% shooting from the field and only 4 of 18 from deep (22%.) 10 assists to 7 turnovers and 3 rebounds a game and in this whole stretch he never once approached double digits in scoring.

All of this, the good and the bad, goes into complete reversal during the next 6 games against USF, Tulane, Cinci, USF, UCF and last nights game against Memphis.

In this 6 game stretch CV has been over double digits every single game, averaging 13.8 points on 48% shooting from the field and 19-36 from 3 (52%). His Assist to TO ratio is better than 3 to 1 (17 to 5) while adding in just over 4 rebounds a game.

As great a boost as this has given us Vance has gone in the exact opposite direction. 5 ppg on 30% shooting, 6 of 16 from 3 (38%) with 15 assists to 11 turnovers and 5 rebounds a nite.

Playing time, due to injuries, has been fairly consistent for both players since January, so these numbers reflect real performance.

Freshman are notoriously inconsistent, game to game and even minute by minute. It would be nice to imagine the outcome if we could get both of these guys performing at their best on the same night.

I wonder if it's worth noting that in the 6 game stretch of good CV play, we are 5 and 1, while in the 6 game stretch of good play from VJ we were 3 and 3?

I wonder if it's at all a conditioning issue as well, seems Vance has just hit the proverbial rookie wall. I believe he had conditioning issues to start the season and could be experiencing that again. Vital on the other hand seems to get stronger and more confident each game.

you hit it on the head mate. He is sluggish out there. He has tons of talent but at 6-9 with little post game ability, he needs to be more like DD in terms of first step quickness. I just dont see how his current frame will bode well for him

Coincidentally, I was looking at their 3-point shooting today and how it compares to past UConn freshmen using the Player Season finder here (only goes back to 1992-93): Player Season Finder | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com

UConn freshmen who have shot 36% or better from 3 on at least 99 attempts:

Ben Gordon - 41.3% (62/150)

Doron Sheffer - 40.7% (50/123)

Rashad Anderson
- 39.3% (55/140)

Richard Hamilton
- 37.6% (70/186)

Vance Jackson - 37.4% (37/99)

Christian Vital - 36.9% (41/111)

Jeremy Lamb
- 36.8% (46/125)

Khalid El-Amin
- 36.5% (81/222)

Other UConn freshmen who have shot 36% or better from 3 on at least 40 attempts:

Rudy Gay - 46.7% (28/60)

Denham Brown
- 41.7% (30/72)

Ray Allen
- 40.2% (33/82)

Stanley Robinson
- 38.1% (16/42)

Ryan Boatright
- 37.7% (26/69)

Tony Robertson
- 37.0% (17/46)

Charlie Villanueva
- 36.7% (18/49)

The injuries have afforded them a great opportunity at playing time and for the most part they have exceeded expectations to me.
Hoping they are motivated for the off season; those 3 pt. stats are comparable to some pretty good company from UConn past.
Would love to see them keep growing and wind up as pros somewhere at the end. A mighty beginning for both on a very trying season. Hope last night was a big boost for the whole team for the stretch.

I disagree with he being sluggish out there - perhaps at certain points of the game but not overall. You also are significantly understating his post game ability. He has shown that he has capable inside moves and footwork and has proven he can rebound. As a freshman that was not expecting more than token PT he has exceeded all forecasts.. If he played AAU he probably played more minutes than the 25 games to date.
