UTSA Postgame Thread

And I keep reminding people that teams only need to get a win to move on, even if it’s ugly or low scoring margin. Both of us are going to be ignored
I believe that Geno had no intention of embarrassing UTSA. He called off the full court press, went to a soft zone, & refused to play his starters in the 4th quarter depite their lack of playing time.
A 40+ point MOV was satisfying enough & UTSA left Storrs with a sense of pride. A win for everyone!

Geno also has a long and respectful relationship with Karen Aston from her days as HC at TX. Here again, Geno has no interest in embarrassing a fellow, longtime HC.

Would love to have the chance to attend practice today. What do the coaches focus on when the next game is tomorrow? And, they are all one and done from now on. Great comfort in knowing we have a coaching staff for whom this is familiar ground. The Cuse has some talent. Would have preferred Iowa State, but we should “survive and advance”. Go Huskies!

I suspect they work on any scout complexities as a walk through, a light workout, and lots of ball tossing at the hoop.

UConn has this process down to a science. The “scout” on Syracuse was done before the weekend, revised shortly after the Orange beat the Cyclones. The scout was rolled out to the team last night and reinforced today and tomorrow. Practices will be relatively light involving stretching, shooting drills and implementing the game plan for tomorrow’s game.

I have always believed that in order to beat UConn during the tournament, you better beat them during the 1st game of the weekend, when you have more time to prepare, because no coaching staff does a better job of preparation on a single day’s rest than Geno and his staff.

I disagree that we shouldn’t be playing bench players. You never know what will happen in the tournament and it’s good for every player to be prepared.
I agree. UConn had two players sitting out much of the first half with three fouls. Personally, I'd rather have subs in than have Azzi foul out in the first half. ;)

Also the team will have four games in something like ten days. The players all always have nagging injuries. This was the first and likely easiest game of the tournament, let the players who will probably be playing 30-35 minutes in later rounds rest. Let the players who might not have meaningful minutes in the Final Four get some minutes on network TV. I would've liked to see Ayanna and Caroline score, but enjoyed seeing them out with Kelis in the last five minutes. I really really hope Patterson comes back next year.

One thing to add: Did anyone notice that Ashlynn was much more aggressive offensively when Azzi was out for much of the first half? She does what her team needs, and they needed scoring while their scorer was on the bench.

.-.

Geno is generous allowing people to attend his practices. Not THAT generous, though. This is when he really makes his secret sauce.

Good call! And I'm sure she appreciates his respect.
