Exclusive: UT-Arlington is considering reviving its football program more than 30 years after it was disbanded

For the first time in 14 years, UT-Arlington is seriously considering the revival of its dormant football program.

UTA president Vistasp Karbhari and athletic director Jim Baker have examined the costs of adding a football team within the next 10 years, according to documents obtained through an open records request. In addition to football, the Mavericks have also looked at adding women’s soccer and beach volleyball.

In 1985, the university disbanded its football program because of budget constraints. In a statement provided on Thursday, Baker said the university is seeking an additional feasibility study from a third party. Baker also said the football program “must be exclusively funded by private, philanthropic resources” and exclude any additional money from student fees.

Texas certainly has a lot of good HS players, but how have things worked out for Texas St? UTSA? Why would UT-Arl be any different?

Not to mention nearby SMU.

And they'd become the 5th most notable FB program in their own market! Behind TCU, Baylor (sorta), SMU, and even UNT.

And that's after U Texas, A&M, and Oklahoma, all of whom have a major presence in DFW.

So long as the team runs in the black with no taxpayer or student subsidy, it's a stellar idea.

When it comes to football and Texas, this statement is telling:

"The Rangers intend to make the stadium seat about 25,000 for football. It's likely that some upper-level seats, particularly in the left field corner, could be tarped over for football. But it could be the first step toward making the stadium primarily a football-based venue. It's conceivable that Arlington ISD could play games there."

Is there any other state out there that can regullary fill a 25K scaled-down pro-sports stadium for regular high school football games?

As they say, everything is big in Texas and that is certainly the case for Friday night lights. These are some Texas high school football stadiums that have opened in the last few years:

When I played for East Hartford, I think the stadium had a capacity of 500. Then only time it was full was Thanksgiving against Penny
