That sure looked like another blown ACL for Holden. I know some are questioning him playing as much as he did. Frankly, he looked a bit lost out there, and had a few good looks that missed badly. Diskerud looked much more solid in his replacement.

Rather than start another thread, I'll comment on the USA victory here. Good win by the boys. Way to take home the hardware! Here are some of my observations of the game / tournament:

1) Tough to see Holden go down like that, which probably spells bad things for his chances on the first team in the near future.
2) Beckerman has played himself onto the final 23 in my opinion, although I know that some of you don't like him as much as I do.
3) Johnson and Donovan are locks (Donovan is obvious, as he was always a lock in my opinion so long as he wanted to play).
4) Diskerud definitely made a strong case for inclusion as well.
5) Corona, Bedoya, Torres, Wondolowski, and Shea are on the outside looking in. Even with Shea "scoring" the goal today.
6) I think Beasley had a very good tourney, and he has what many of our other left backs don't have: recovery speed. Also, the fact that he gets up the wing often probably makes Klinsmann a happy man (and me too).

Gold Cup Champions! Well done...

Thank you for not polluting the board with another thread.

I didn't get to see today's game, but I agree Beckerman is on the team.

How did Rimando play?

Nice win today despite a few blown chances and some difficultly with the speedier wing play by Panama. Still a trophy is a trophy and everyone who played today made a solid contibution to the win. A total team effort was required with Panama selling out to deny LD and EJ the ball and swarming to the ball carrier. We saw more about who shouldn't belong on the WC squad today than who should, but it was a well deserved capper to a great few weeks for the USMNT.

My take aways in general are these:
1. Don't get used to the ball ripping the back of the net with such regularity. We've seen a quantum leap in offensive proficiency and potential, but in the three games of consequence we managed five goals.

2. The back line is still an issue until it can contain attacks from better offensive squads. Today, Panama was playing for the bad turnover and for set pieces. The squad did well to not give them many opportunities. Keeping possession was a primary reason for this, but aside from one or two minor adventures in the box. Everyone held together. The auditions will continue right up until Brazil. JK seems pleased but still unsatisfied that the pool is deep enough.

3. Almost no one's spot is safe aside from the 2 keepers, LD, Dempsey, and Bradley. Everyone else has flaws and someone pushing them either for a spot on the roster or in the starting XI. Any predictions must assume everyone is playing regularly for their clubs and is in good form.

So, without further Adu or Edu. the squad, post GC bubble watch style.

Locks for the 23:
Howard, Guzan, Dempsey, Donovan, Bradley

Should be in barring injury or significant drop in form:
Jones, Altidore, Cameron, F. Johnson, Beasley

Likely in (still work to do to lock up a spot):
Goodson, Besler, Zusi, Gonzalez, Rimando

In the mix (must continue to show good form for their clubs)
Parkhurst, Wondolowski, E. Johnson, Corona, Torres, Gomez, Cherundolo, Chandler

On the fringe (need to improve or show they can fill a specific need):
Beckerman, Holden, Diskerud, Bedoya, S. Johnson, D. Williams, Shea, Bocanegra

Need help (likely out of the mix barring an Eddie Johnson like return to form in the next year)
Castillo, Orozco Fiscal, Davis, Evans, Agudelo, Edu, Kljestan, Boyd, Onyewu, Feilhaber

The names in Bold are who I am confident will be in Brazil. 16 names, leaving 7 spots for the roster, 3 for the gameday 18. Of the seven I predict:

2 out of Wondo, E. Johnson, and Gomez (1 makes the 18)
2 out of Corona, Torres, Gomez (1 makes the 18)
2 out of Chandler, Cherundolo, and a defender to be named later. (1 makes the 18, if Cameron is a Midfielder)
1 out of Beckerman, Diskerud, Holden and D. Williams, Torres, Corona.

Based soley on what I've seen this cycle from this group, I take, Johnson, Corona and two of Wondo, Gomez or Torres up front; Chandler plus one at defense (would like it to be Dolo) and D. Williams.

Beckerman, Diskerud, Holden and possibly Shea may slip in ahead of one of the forwards. With LD and Dempsey capable of playing up, it seems unnecessary to take all four I listed and each can fill a specific function, though I think none of them have the skills for more than a cameo in the WC. I do see premise of a Beckerman or Shea seeing the field as more likely than say Wondo, so JK may go that direction. I'd prefer to keep as much heat on Altidore as possible, he's too important to let him feel unchallenged.

Three thoughts on Monday morning:

  1. Brek Shea has loads of issues & is a very unfinished product. But, I think he is different than all the alternatives ... and has potential. For that reason, Shea has a real shot at making Brazil 2014.
  2. I like to watch Torres and Corona. But they are inconsistent. Brilliant for moments. Bedoya, however, shows far more often and can be a factor for your team on defense and playmaking.
  3. Rimando - I love. I don't think we are going to see a change from Tim Howard; but NR has a calmness and presence that just gives me confidence. Two of the goals against Honduras were after long goal kicks ... which can be attributed to luck. But luck seems to be on this guy's side. Rimando has the ability to play a ball with his feet like none of the others I watch.

.-.
Eddie Johnson and his hair and attitude aren't going to impress a goal scorer like Klinsmann after choking on a perfect serve and an open net from 6 yards. You can have the attitude, and head butt players and get carded - if you can back up your game. But only if you can back up your game.

Klinsmann's reaction to that miss on TV in the box was priceless. That goal puts the game away, and you can't miss that in the World Cup.

Rimando 34 Tim Howard 34.

There's one thing about German soccer - they are systematic in what they do. Klinsmann put this roster Gold Cup roster together for a very specific purpose, to develop depth, and still have a good mix of experience and age, to get through and win it, and it was gravy to have Landon Donovan to mix in for his return to form, and Donovan showed that he deserves one more run at a Cup for sure. We are developing for the USA program now, down the depth chart, in the way that they do in Germany. The players are expected to be regulars on their club teams, and they are expected to show up and produce at their levels of competition and age, and Concacaf is not World Cup level of competition, and we should have younger players out there that are cutting their teeth and making waves, balanced with a few veterans. Howard and Rimando, chances are this will be their last run at the world cup too. The future at goal keeper, I think, is that kid that made the save to start the fast break against Costa Rica at Rentschler a few weeks ago (and also gave up the goal that kept the U.S. out of the last Olympics)

Sean Johnson ... he was surprising athletic for a big guy.

How did Rimando play?

Rimando didn't have much to do, to be honest. The play was mostly one-way traffic. He made a couple of nice plays with his feet (Wynalda was "wowed" by a 40 yard pass from Rimando to Diskerud, but that's only because Wynalda never connected on a 40 yard pass in his life). Solid tournament from Rimando, though...

While winning the Gold Cup is like winning the AL Central a couple of years ago (Minnesota with 80 wins or something), you can't help but be more excited about the progress under Klinsman. World Cup another story. Everything looks crisper and shorter.

Donovan is like Derek Jeter. Not perfect but who else would you rather have on your team in crunch time.

Panama played to win on set pieces, so the game was pretty boring IMHO.

I am excited to see the final 23 and I hope that they continue to make progress into next year.

Subba nice analysis.

Why so harsh on Wynalda??? He arguably accomplished more than Donovan in the same time frame ... probably more had he not tore his ACL. Haven't you ever seen the free kick goal in the Silverdome in the '94 cup??? Probably one of the sweetest goals scored by an American at an international competition ... ever.

He is attempting to be Soccer's version of Tim McCarver, except I like Wynalda. But I prefer the brits in the booth.

I don't know as much about our roster as many of you guys, but when I see Shea getting ready to come in I get excited because he seems to make things happen. He attacks with purpose, which is something we've been missing for a long time. He may be overzealous at times, but I'll take that in the last 20 minutes when we need a goal. His "goal" yesterday obviously was rolling in, but he was there anyway. His goal in East Hartford came as a result of starting a run toward open space up the field from his own 18. He's very valuable as a late sub in a game where we need a goal to tie or win, and I hope we see him on the roster for the WC.

I love the English play by play guys like Martin Tyler and Ian Darke ... but I can't stomach the condescending McManaman ... although I think he may over do it sometimes just to counter-balance Lalas. ;)

I thought he did ok for EPL with Ian Darke on ESPN. I felt their commentary was better than many of the british pairings found on Fox Soccer. I'll be curious who NBC gets. Have they announced it yet? I really liked Fox's in studio tandem of Stone, Barton, and Wynalda. Kinda wish they'd go over to NBC.

There's no doubt he has a certain X-factor but really of his two goals both were gifts. One a free break that he almost botched and the second a tap in that looked to be good. (I forgot to add that he could have been called offside if LD touched the ball, though I may be wrong about that. The 2 on none break always confuses me)

The rest of the time he's shows some of the worst football IQ. But, I like his speed and that straight line dog running to meet the mailman thing he has going on.

I could see him making the squad as a 20 minute specialist because he is different than Torres, Corona and any of the other wings. I wouldn't pick him myself as the quality just isn't there.

I should have clarified ... I can't stomach McManaman when he does anything US related. He is very condescending toward anything American. He almost cried on ESPN after the Robert Green debacle ... Lalas basically celebrated the 1-1 tie in his face. I like him when he is paired with Darke and the US is not involved ... pretty entertaining too.

Shea has made a few things happen at the right time in recent weeks, and he had a cross that EJ should have finished yesterday. But if he gets any more than about 3 touches, he typically goes into the black hole.

On another note, it will be interesting to see how Aron Johannsson may fit into the USMNT. Wonder if they'll get him approved in time for the Bosnia game.

I don't disagree with you on the quality/talent/IQ issue.

I like him because the reason those goals were "gifts" is because he was where he was supposed to be (running to the goal in open space). If he doesn't start the run from his own 18 against Costa Rica, that goal doesn't get scored. Nobody else made that run. The goal yesterday was a similar situation. That ball was rolling in, but he was there to be sure. It could have easily hit the post, or a defender could have been there to clear it. That wasn't even a shot anyway, it would have been a fluke of a goal. A cross that was missed, that somehow was going to trickle in. I like that he finishes plays, we need finishers if we're going to advance because our back line is downright scary.

We've been lacking for goals prior to the last 7-8 games, and he seems to have that ability to get himself to the right place at the right time. Without a lot of improvement, I can't see him as a starter. But as a specialty bench player, I see some value.

First, you would be the only person in the world who believes that Wynalda has accomplished more than Donovan, regardless of time frame. Second, I saw Wynalda's entire US international career, and there is NO doubt in my mind that he could never make the team today. Third, he is a brutal commentator. I would take just about anyone over him (except Lalas....dear God, not Lalas!!). I would even take Twellman over him, and that's really saying something.

I think Gus Johnson does a decent job alongside him, but man oh man! Give me the ESPN crew of Darke and Healey, or Twellman, or anyone else....

Too bad he's not a LB, RB, RM or even CB. I'd be willing to go into Brazil with what we have everywhere else right now.
