I love the English play by play guys like Martin Tyler and Ian Darke ... but I can't stomach the condescending McManaman ... although I think he may over do it sometimes just to counter-balance Lalas. ;)
I thought he did ok for EPL with Ian Darke on ESPN. I felt their commentary was better than many of the british pairings found on Fox Soccer. I'll be curious who NBC gets. Have they announced it yet? I really liked Fox's in studio tandem of Stone, Barton, and Wynalda. Kinda wish they'd go over to NBC.

I don't know as much about our roster as many of you guys, but when I see Shea getting ready to come in I get excited because he seems to make things happen. He attacks with purpose, which is something we've been missing for a long time. He may be overzealous at times, but I'll take that in the last 20 minutes when we need a goal. His "goal" yesterday obviously was rolling in, but he was there anyway. His goal in East Hartford came as a result of starting a run toward open space up the field from his own 18. He's very valuable as a late sub in a game where we need a goal to tie or win, and I hope we see him on the roster for the WC.

There's no doubt he has a certain X-factor but really of his two goals both were gifts. One a free break that he almost botched and the second a tap in that looked to be good. (I forgot to add that he could have been called offside if LD touched the ball, though I may be wrong about that. The 2 on none break always confuses me)

The rest of the time he's shows some of the worst football IQ. But, I like his speed and that straight line dog running to meet the mailman thing he has going on.

I could see him making the squad as a 20 minute specialist because he is different than Torres, Corona and any of the other wings. I wouldn't pick him myself as the quality just isn't there.

I should have clarified ... I can't stomach McManaman when he does anything US related. He is very condescending toward anything American. He almost cried on ESPN after the Robert Green debacle ... Lalas basically celebrated the 1-1 tie in his face. I like him when he is paired with Darke and the US is not involved ... pretty entertaining too.

Shea has made a few things happen at the right time in recent weeks, and he had a cross that EJ should have finished yesterday. But if he gets any more than about 3 touches, he typically goes into the black hole.

On another note, it will be interesting to see how Aron Johannsson may fit into the USMNT. Wonder if they'll get him approved in time for the Bosnia game.

I don't disagree with you on the quality/talent/IQ issue.

I like him because the reason those goals were "gifts" is because he was where he was supposed to be (running to the goal in open space). If he doesn't start the run from his own 18 against Costa Rica, that goal doesn't get scored. Nobody else made that run. The goal yesterday was a similar situation. That ball was rolling in, but he was there to be sure. It could have easily hit the post, or a defender could have been there to clear it. That wasn't even a shot anyway, it would have been a fluke of a goal. A cross that was missed, that somehow was going to trickle in. I like that he finishes plays, we need finishers if we're going to advance because our back line is downright scary.

We've been lacking for goals prior to the last 7-8 games, and he seems to have that ability to get himself to the right place at the right time. Without a lot of improvement, I can't see him as a starter. But as a specialty bench player, I see some value.

Why so harsh on Wynalda??? He arguably accomplished more than Donovan in the same time frame ... probably more had he not tore his ACL. Haven't you ever seen the free kick goal in the Silverdome in the '94 cup??? Probably one of the sweetest goals scored by an American at an international competition ... ever.

First, you would be the only person in the world who believes that Wynalda has accomplished more than Donovan, regardless of time frame. Second, I saw Wynalda's entire US international career, and there is NO doubt in my mind that he could never make the team today. Third, he is a brutal commentator. I would take just about anyone over him (except Lalas....dear God, not Lalas!!). I would even take Twellman over him, and that's really saying something.

I think Gus Johnson does a decent job alongside him, but man oh man! Give me the ESPN crew of Darke and Healey, or Twellman, or anyone else....

Too bad he's not a LB, RB, RM or even CB. I'd be willing to go into Brazil with what we have everywhere else right now.
