USC Post Game

The end of the third quarter was rough. All of a sudden a barrage of points for USC. I think the refs changed the way they were calling the game and defensively… we didn’t really know what to do when that happened.

Let's face it, Sarah had an off night and seemed out of sorts in the first half and K9 appeared to be off her game also likely due to the pressure of returning back. Plus we traveled 3000 miles for this game. despite this we were up by 40 or close to it at one point. This is one of our best defensive teams ever. Thing of beauty.
After the first few minutes, I mentioned to Mrs. Gigio that Sarah did not look right. She said "she looks pale" (Mrs. Gigio is very good at TV diagnosis'). Sarah was definitely not running on all cylinders, but kept clawing away and doing her best. A solid team backside beating on the opponents home court. Defense was outrageous, and Azzi shut Davidson down. Blanca is really special, Ash has her sniper scope working along with Azzi, and KK runs the show on high speed.

Usually when I look up and see we're up 53-19, I start feeling sorry for the other team. But the other team is usually a poor little Division II troop that doesn't really want to be there. I don't feel sorry for USC. You're the number 16 team in the country with the number one recruit. You mean to tell me you can't break 20 points in 25 minutes of play? I didn't feel sorry for them at all.

Lindsay Gottlieb looked like a deer in the headlights every time the camera was on her.

UConn has had some great defensive teams in the past, but I doubt there has been a player like Blanca that Geno could bring off the bench with her athletic skills and immediately impact the game. She will be an absolute terror on both ends of the court come tourney time.

Most times when Azzi is mentioned after a game, it usually has to do with her impeccable shooting. However, her defensive job on Jazzy Davidson was splendid. Azzi was so close to Jazzy, she heard her thoughts.

At this stage, UConn's team defense is ahead of its offense. Let that sink in. When the offense catches up, UConn will be a team with few weaknesses.

Nykeaha Sales was more dominant her freshman year off the bench

Yeah; by her standards. She was really off today. She lost her balance a few times. She didn’t catch the ball clean a few times. Very unusual.
I think it was the travel. it's a lot. Once she got going in the second half it was a different story.
I think Strong could have done anything she wanted to do if it was necessary.
She still had 14 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks and one of them was a definite "nasty".

That may have been it with Sarah. TV diagnoses are always the most accurate!

I was sitting there watching the 3rd quarter and thought that we were really discombobulated and barely getting by during "another one of those 3rd quarters". Then at the end of the quarter I saw where we scored 30 our highest scoring of the game. I guess it might have been because I was used to seeing USC actually scoring.
I too thought that Serah was having a terrific game and then she missed two FTs and she was taken out.
I will repeat what others have posted, Azzi put on a defensive clinic guarding Davidson, she didn't reach double digits until there was about 3 minutes left in the game. I think Azzi was resting on our bench.
Was really happy to see the after game handshake line between Kayleigh and the USC coaches, each seemed good about it and respectful.

Just another well played game by the NO 1 team in the country. This game showed Uconn is ready defensively to take on the elite teams and our scoring will get better with the coming games in the Big East. 10 and 0. A VERY good start and Uconn's new players are for real and contribute big time. The Mission ...... Win the NCAAQ National Title. The Answer....... UCONN accepts wholeheartedly and will not let Huskies fans down... GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!

What

Jana’s foul on a a screen with a out 5 minutes left worse call all night she was planted for 3 seconds the girl backed into her
Actually the foul should have been on Azzi who shoved the USC player into Jana. That said, a lot of times when USC players fell we were called for nonexistant fouls.

I got Michigan flashbacks during the 3rd and fourth quarters because of, what seemed like, innumerable bunnies missed - on the other hand, USC had no one going super nova on us...
Strange the number of layups missed by so many of our players. Other than Sarah, our players seem to rush their layups. The second half was difficult to watch with USC players nearly always falling down to get an easy whistle, foul or not. It seems like too many fouls are being called away from the ball.

The first half for many games is clinic basketball. Our defense is a thing of beauty. Geno has the players to run other teams into a tizzy. Our guards seem to love playing defense and getting turnovers. Several of our players had outstanding games today including Shade, Serah, #4 and KK. Wow.

Love the Kobe’s the players wore!

-you have to look hard to find anything to even nit pic with this defensive performance. They just never allow an easy look.

-Advantage Azzi in the head to head matchup against Jazzy.

-Ash kept her streak alive of getting at least one offensive rebound in every game. She probably had her best game of the year.

-It is a stat that not even DavidInNaples would have but I wonder how many times Ash has ended a quarter or half with a basket in her career. I bet a half dozen at least.

-Blanca continues to demonstrate that she is a difficult guard for any defender off the dribble. Especially when the defender is a big.

-K9 seemed to press in her return to Los Angeles but redeemed herself with a spectacular up and under at the end.

-With each passing game, Serah provides clues as to why she was the BIG 10 defensive player of the year.

-Maybe it is non conference and still early but nobody seems to follow Michigan’s lead and play zone.

-It seemed USC was getting some home court advantage with calls. It didn’t affect the outcome but all the Trojans had to do was fall and they got a call.

-It is weird to say, but by her standards, Sarah had an off day.

A little ragged in the second half but overall, this team seems to get better and better. Especially on defense.
I agree that Sarah had an off day and that, in the end, it was a fine game for ASH. Let's also note how good Blanca was on defense. Coach seemed to hold back using both Heckel and Allie. Not sure why. Williams still missing some baskets from underneath which look makable. Nice that she made 12 footer early. Geno played Caroline earlier than usual, and earlier than some who have been ahead of her on depth chart. I wonder if she is starting to find herself, a bit more, in practice.

You know when your all-American player has ok game that wasn't statistically dominant and we beat a ranked team with ease, that the team understands the assignment. Some days you just don't have your best stuff but you grind and your teammates pick up the slack. UCONN is a vibe and the vibe is good!!!

I agree.
They were oo busy laughing how easy the game went.
