Updated Way Too Early Top 25 - 04-22-2025

Since - based on the date above - you have a clear picture of the future, did we win number 13 in the coming season?

Didn't see this anywhere else so apologies if it's redundant

South Carolina moves up from #2 to #1
UConn moves up from #3 to #2
UCLA slides down from #1 to #3

Initial thoughts on rankings are:

-There's a clear drop off after the top 4. The top 4 teams look relatively balanced in terms of post play and perimeter scoring, but after those squads there are question marks for most teams. Arguments can be made for the top 3 teams to be ranked #1 but Texas is the clear #4 team. They're good enough to be better than everyone else, but their lack of offense likely prevents them from being a true title contender unless their system improves big time next year.

-I'd probably keep UCONN #1 considering they were basically 30 points better than SC last year in both showings and have 2 of their 3 major weapons back. Latson is an upgrade over Fulwiley but even with Paige gone I'd still keep UCONN #1.

Teams too high:

-Oklahoma. They look good on paper but were not a very good team this year. They weren't competitive with better teams and I'm not sure bringing in freshman Chavez elevates them to #6. I'd probably put them closer to 10.

-North Carolina is way too high losing 3 really key players. I'm not sold on them being top 15. Maybe top 20?

-Iowa State. Crooks is an excellent post and Brown is solid but I don't think they have the overall talent to be a top 15 team. This year they were not very good and lost a great PG in Ryan. I think they're fringe top 25.

Teams too low:
-Maryland is a true Final Four threat IMO. Okananwa/Garzon are fantastic additions and if Merkle can get in better shape they can compete with the top of the Big Ten. Top 10.

-Michigan. Their terrific freshman class all become sophomores and Kim Barnes-Arico consistently does more with less. I think Michigan could teeter around top 10, though they're likely a year away.

-TCU. How is a team with Olivia Miles unranked? Also did everyone just forget the job Mark Campbell did this past year? They're going to be a top 20 team with Silva getting adjusted and having Suarez in the lineup.

-Kentucky. A combo of Tonie Morgan/Clara Strack should keep Kentucky a top 20 team. Plus Teonni Key and Amelia Hassett are both back.

-Ohio State should also be ranked. Cambridge was one of the better freshmen in the country last year and McGuff's teams are always decent.

Uncommitted Transfers to Keep and Eye On:
-Milaysia Fulwiley, she's being rumored as interested in LSU but I think she'd make a much bigger splash at a different program.

-Gianna Kneepkens, adding her to UCLA, South Carolina or Texas could elevate them to #1 status. I'd remove Oklahoma as being labeled too high if she ends up a Sooner. She's relatively unheralded on the national scale but might be the most significant recruit in the portal this year.

-Serah Williams, she'd solve any question marks in the post for both LSU and UCONN. She'd also be a big upgrade inside for North Carolina.

-Allie Kubek, she could solve post depth issues for a lot of top 10-15 teams as a face up 4 with good skills.

-Kayleigh Heckel, if she lands at Vanderbilt it solves their PG problems and gives them an elite core of sophomores and juniors for the next 2 years. If she goes to Notre Dame (another school she's visiting), I don't think it changes their status.

I think Notre Dame and USC are too high. You need to rank them based on what they have, not what ND might still get and hoping that Juju comes back early.

The media (and recruits) are recognizing how good Shea is.

What's early? Isn't average recovery time ~ 9 months? That would put her back in Jan.

Merkle was a liability this year and seemingly for more than being out of shape. Probably not a player to put hope into.

For USC, a 2-4 lineup of Kennedy Smith, Jazzy Davidson and Kara Dunn is excellent. Not sure where Londynn Jones fits in or if she’ll be the PG (she was more of a shooting guard at UCLA) and they need post help but that’s a really good core to build around. I think they’re top 20. Plus Gottlieb has done a great job the past couple of years. I don’t think anyone is banking on Juju being back in time next year.

Notre Dame is a weird case because Hidalgo might be the best returning player in women’s basketball next year but she has virtually no high quality teammates. This year was a mess at the end but Ivey is generally a pretty solid coach and I’d bet she’ll have them top 20 even with a much thinner roster.

Off the court issues or something related to her play?

No wonder she transferred, after getting trashed in the school newspaper. What an insulting article.

I get that she's not especially quick, but neither is PSU as a whole. And if she was getting double-teamed in the paint on every possession, what on earth was the rest of the team doing about it?

I mean, if you look at their schedule, their OOC was pretty weak except for Georgia. Merkle was pretty much unchallenged by the other creampuffs they played. The warning sign was probably that loss to SJU, who shouldn't have been able to challenge the PSU front court. But they're scrappy and that was too much for the PSU backcourt (12 TOs!). Then B1G conference play begins and they are crushed game after game. The article focuses on the Minnesota game and tries to blame this on Merkle. But their entire team is outplayed except for Gabby Elliott.

I expect Merkle has something to offer at a higher level of competition. But she will need a lot of guard support, and Maryland can provide that. She won't be great, but she won't be useless either. More or less just like Del Rosario -- tall and slow moving.

Hard to read too much into a pretty awful student article. FWIW, I looked at box scores and she tore it up after it was published.

If she can demand defensive attention and finish well around the basket, it'll open up the perimeter game for their elite wings. I'm not sure if she'll make a huge impact or not, but I think at the very least she'll be an upgrade inside and provide Maryland with much needed size which they sorely lacked this past season.

One of the criticisms is that she averages 2.4 fouls per game. A post. Ummm ... ?

What a joke ESPN is! We just beat the living daylights out of SC, twice and they think they (SC) should be ranked over us. I guarantee if the entire situation were exactly reversed they would never bump us up over the “defending champion Gamecocks” . They’re like the person who walks around with toilet paper stuck in their shoe. Everyone can see it but them. Also, why would UCLA have been ranked over us either? We smoked them too! Yes, we are losing Paige. That’s a big loss, but anyone who thinks UConn is not fully capable of repeating next year is simply out of touch. SC lost what many were saying was their best player in Fulwiley, while UCLA lost a whole group of players! Sure, SC picked up Latson but I have serious doubts we‘re gonna see her putting up 23 ppg on a Dawn Staley led team. As for UCLA, good luck winning with two bigs and Kiki Rice!
Rant over! I guess we’ll just have to show them (once again) that a healthy UConn is waaay different from the UConn teams that struggled to field a full team for that 3 1/2 year stretch. UConn, Defending National Champions! That sounds pretty good!:)

Why do so many people get worked up over a ranking based on opinion? It means nothing.

WCBB is still very top heavy. It would not surprise me if this past season's top 8 (1 & 2 seeds) are the same as next season's top 8 (1 & 2 seeds). Just mixed up a little. Ranking & seeding mean nothing.

It did make me laugh that, in an article based on the premise that the transfer portal has changed women's college basketball rosters so much over the past two weeks that a new top-25 is necessary, UConn's zero portal additions were enough to move them up a spot. :)

My issue with the WTE polls is that they are based on a lot of speculation on what the transfers bring to their new team, and don't have any basis on whether all the pieces will fit. UConn is bringing back all but 3 players, adding 3, and the core of the returnees is pretty darn good. Everyone there knows expectations, so plugging in the freshman will be as it always is.
