No surprise who remains on top after this season. Four years into the decade, UConn has four #1 seeds, two championships and two other Final Four berths. Of course, from 2000-03, UConn had four #1 seeds, three championships, and one other F4 berth. So clearly the program is slipping.

The full top 25 thus far is below:

Sure- this is something I came up with after getting some input from the board a year or so ago.

The system rewards regular season and NCAA tourney success. The best (albeit imperfect) proxy for regular season success was tourney seeding. You get five points for a four seed, 10 for a three, 20 for a two, and 30 for a one. As for tourney results, you get five points for making the S16, 15 for the E8, 30 for the F4, 40 for being national runners up, and 70 for a National Championship.

How many points to award for a championship proved the most controversial point. You want it to be significant because that is the ultimate goal after all, but you also want to reward consistency over the balance of 10 years. I think it's shaping up pretty nicely at 70, though. A&M is slipping a bit (as they should) and teams that are consistently having success year in and year out are rising...including Tennessee.

Btw, I went back and ran the numbers for the 80s, 90s, and 00s. Tennessee was the clear #2 of the 80s, clear #1 of the 90s, and clear #2 of the 00s. Only Georgia was even top 10 in all three decades, much less top two. UConn was #3 of the 90s and #1 of the 00s. La Tech was #1 of the 80s.
