Ahem, Bill Russell the coach was the first black coach in the NBA in 1966 for the Celtics.

slightly less cosmicy as this wasn't just "a dude".
 
Cliff was a huge recruiting get at the time. Back in the day Phil Chardis wrote for the Manchester Journal Inquirer and was great at covering the recruits we were after. He and Phil Gamble and Jeff King from Michigan got us headed in the right direction.
