UNC Hires Mike Malone | The Boneyard

UNC Hires Mike Malone

Recruiting has a budget now…just like in the nba. He will prob have an all portal team like St John’s and hire an assistant to do whatever limited Hs recruiting they do

Does he also have a 25 yr old girlfriend like Bill

The GM hire is going to be huge. They need to Knox that out of the park.

Might be a sign that Field of 68 streams/pods too much because Hansbrough brought Malone's name up last week and I didn't see it generate much media traction

Since college coaching isn’t about convincing 16-year-olds to like you anymore, this has a better chance of success than it would have a few years ago

People don't like to move, and this was also before the NIL stuff was as entrenched and more solidified as it is now, and Kentucky's place at the top of that hierarchy. They were going after national championship winning coaches who had great situations and were building statues on campus.

UNC will likely miss on its top few targets, too. (May, Lloyd, possibly Donovan).
Couldn't even get McCollum to interview.

I am warming up on this pick. Malone wasn’t a great pro game coach, but he will blow away most college coaches. The reason most college coaches fail in the NBA is they can’t game plan at the same level in part because college players couldn’t handle more sophisticated schemes. College rosters are older and more experienced now. They can handle more than they used to.

This could work for UNC.

it could work but how seriously will malone commit to the job. seems like he just wants to be closer to his daughter.

the portal era is all about talent assessment. nba coaches are largely insulated from that side.

It is completely a pro model. Recruiting doesn’t matter, and talent evaluation is a lot easier, more assessment than projection.
Didn't they initially target coaches who had college success? I dont think an NBA coach was their first choice. Could be wrong as I havent been following too closely.

Before he was hired, the one thing people were saying about Malone in regard to this job was his connection to Jokic's agent, who's been placing the Euro guys at Illinois.

Good call. They needed to lock someone up before the portal opened. I wonder what this does for Mingo. You’d have to think their model attracts euros and OADs already thinking about the NBA.

If UNC buys Illinois’ primary Balkans talent buyer, Orlando Antigua, that would be a heckuva gut shot to the Illini.

Agreed. It's just free agency. The term "roster construction" is used more often than "recruiting" these days.

The only difference might be with how you coach a college team vs NBA. The head coach is much more responsible for player development.

This might work out great but it also might not. And that's the problem. UNC should be one of those jobs where they go after a "no doubt" candidate. They shouldn't have to take a flier on anyone.
