I can see NIL money getting stupid like the NBA contracts and just making it more likely that UConn will need deeper pockets from many sources

Which is why UConn needs to join a stronger conference. Getting $25 to $30 million a year would go a long way with NIL money

If Coleman Hawkins is worth $2 million for 1 year then Bacot deserves every penny of the $2 million he got.

Kind of crazy that he may have earned more in college than he will in the NBA. This NIL stuff is insane but it is what it is.
For a top college team that might spend $5 million on NIL annually, $2 million is 40% of their "salary cap" which isn't too far off what a superstar gets in the NBA so it actually sort of makes sense in those terms especially given these aren't multi year commitments.

It would be fascinating to see how different top schools are breaking down their NIL budgets by %. I am sure there is a debate to be had for how to break things out. What's the right amount to spend on your starting 5? 70%? 90%? Ignoring ego related stuff, do you want two guys making up 60% of the budget (the big 2 or big 3 in NBA terms) or is it better to have a balanced team of veterans all making 15% each?

I suspect UConn is a relatively balanced approach in their starting 5 and other teams would do best if they were able to imitate that, but there are only so many quality players to go around. If you can't get 5 top 100 players at $500k-$1M, you are left with the choice of leaving donor/sponsor money on the table or overpaying someone like Coleman Hawkins just to make sure you get him.

Are teams spending $5 million in NIL? I don't know but that seems high for KSU. I don't think UConn is spending nearly that much. I could be wrong on that but I haven't seen any numbers recently.

I found this article about KSU's NIL. Says it's hard to calculate what their budget is but that Jerome Tang has embraced NIL after initially being reluctant. https://archive.ph/payec

Are you saying Coleman Hawkins is a superstar? The same guy that UConn played in the Elite 8? The same guy who averaged 12.1 points and 6.1 rebounds this past season at Illinois? That doesn't feel like superstar status. That feels like a slightly above average D1 starter on a good team.

College athletes used to roam the campus and eat the same dining hall food concoctions we ate

Today they'll be driving to the best nearby steakhouses in any number of luxury sedans and SUVs

Studying is going to be further and further down the list of things to do on the weekend, if it's on the list at all. NIL is going to cause far more damage than good. Imagine the team decides to go to Jordan's and the casinos and be like, "sorry Steve, tonight it's the big time NIL only. No walk-ons."

At the top schools the football team has their own dining room and it has been that way for years. In addition top athletes (football and Basketball) are really not there to go to school. Most of their time is spent training. In fact coaches will tell top players during their recruiting they should not take a rigorous class schedule. I was being recruited by FBS schools and was told they thought I should not be considering an engineering major. This is back in the 1980s.

the difference is bacot wasn't a superstar. he wasn't even all that good...the acc just sucked for the most part, until ncsu decided they were good.

Think Bacot made $2m over his 5 years, not $2m per. Having said that I assume he would make $2m per if he was dipping into the current market.

I know Bacot isn't a UConn guy but come on be logical. Bacot did way more in college than Hawkins has. 2 time 3rd team All American. 2 time first team ACC, 1 time 2nd team and 1 time 3rd team ACC. He holds the UNC record for double-doubles and career rebounds (granted he played 5 years).

My main point still stands. If Hawkins is worth $2 million for 1 season then Bacot was worth a heck of a lot more to UNC. @auggie22 is probably right. In today's NIL world Bacot could probably get $2 million per without any problem.

and guys like adam morrison and jimmer fredette won NPOYs. If you play in a terrible conference, you can put up numbers...especially over 5 years.
