UMass > MAC for all sports in 2025-2026

And what would "win 5-6 games in the MAC" improve for them? You still torpedo the rest of your AD in the process, whether you win 0 or 12. And for no money, unlike if they took 100-0 losses against real teams. Both other choices are easily better.

Anyway - i showed my choice and why - are you going to any time soon, or just post laugh emoji's and strawmen?
UMass has no easy solution. Little interest in the sports programs at the school located in a state with little interest in college athletics. The good news is UMass is a good academic school.

Then they better do something quick. Look, Mass is the 16th ranked state by population. By some measures it is the wealthiest state. Yes, UMass is an embarrassment. If they can't figure out a way to properly fund their athletics department, then they deserve to rot on the vine. Maybe UMass and bcu need to form some type of public/private partnership to try to make 1 decent program out of 2 dumpster fires.
When you combine two dogs with fleas, you just get a bigger dog with fleas, lol.

the only "rest of the AD" is basketball and that's been barely afloat for decades. Hockey and Lacrosse are not affected and that's what really matters to UMass.

How do you “torpedo” the rest? It shouldn’t take much to hit that level. That’s how bad they are.

It doesn’t even sound like basketball is in good shape either. The place is not well.

The MAC should be pissed for letting this disaster into the fold.

I think they’ve hit rock bottom. They should be able to compete in the MAC.
To be fair, UMess would require pile drivers if not coal mining excavators to go much deeper in the Minutemen depths of despair. While not wishing UMess bowl appearances, a couple to 5 wins per season would be a massive improvement. None versus UConn.

There is one step left. The fans and any remaining level of interest. They did draw over 6k a few times for hoops last season. Their first home game this year they drew like 2k. Fans have started to check out even more than they were and season ticket sales are essentially not a thing now. It can and will get worse for them. They will need to be the Gonzaga of the MAC including NCAA tournament runs for anyone to care

I can't believe UMass is worth 20 pages of posts...
success is a fickle mistress so of course we pay close attention to football programs and CR. Our neighbor UMass is a case study in its own right just up the road so I find it particularly interesting

in 2022 there were 7 independents and today there are 2. Although all were independents, their situations and journeys were all very different

UConn (8-3)
ND (8-2)
Army (5-4)
BYU (9-1)
UMass (0-10)
Liberty (4-6)
NMSU (3-7)

Gloating over UMass and its debacle just doesn’t feel right. We have been there. It’s just reinforcing the view “ New England schools in Football are joke “
we've been there and if UConn admins & State of CT are not super super SUPER careful about continued investment, we will be RIGHT back there in the 120's ranking. Let's not get too high and mighty.

This. We are not immune from a bad recruiting class/losses to the portal, not keeping up with NIL, unexpected coaching change…or worse yet, multiple happening at the same time. I’m hopeful we are on the right long-term trajectory but let’s recognize that even with current success we are still far closer to being right back to where UMass is than becoming Ohio State.

yep. i would add to this, that IMO most FBS teams (~60-70%) are more at risk to falling down closer to UMass's end, than rising up to Ohio State's end, if they rest on their laurels.
We're witnessing even P4 programs struggling to keep up with the spending that comes with wearing the B1G/SEC/ACC/XII badges.

I sense a massive breakdown of this system is on the way. The Rutgers and BC's of the world can't keep up.

So, they think they will get High School recruits and build them up. Let's say they attract some good high school players, how many will they retain if a bigger NIL offer comes in? Culture can only hold up so long. Even Mora, who has a great culture, loses guys to the portal.

You all said that the McGuirk would be empty next Wednesday and I'm sure it will be. He doesn't seem like the head coach of an FBS squad but I give him credit. I really want the UMass program to be respectable

No one cares about MAC sports in western MA. Their football team may eventually be respectable but it won’t register with attendance or interest

You are so wrong. Either they care about football of they don't. If the football team wins, people will show up. It really is that simple.

I agree that winning helps. That said, in the season after UMass went 13-2 and were ranked #2 in FCS losing in the championship game, UMass drew about 12k fans per game in 2007 (10-2 regular season with one loss to BC). And, the Thanksgiving week game only drew 5.2k. Unfortunately, the MACtion weeknight games are an attendance killer.

In terms of “really” caring about football in the northeast, it’s pretty easy to make a case that no one does compared to other places. UMass should have dropped football to FCS where they competed for a national championship multiple times and fans showed up in those seasons. They will never be anywhere near that good in FBS, the MAC stinks and no one will care in football or hoops. They are done

Did beat CCSU which beat both Rutgers and BCU.
Great point. They should get a banner made up. Maybe some T-shirts. T-shirts are always nice.
