UMass & Kimani Young

Honestly, he can do better.
This seems to be the popular take here, and perhaps its true. I submit that UMass is in the upper half of A10 jobs. The conference fits his recruiting area. And history shows that success in Amherst can lead a coach to bigger opportunities elsewhere. I’m rooting for Kimani (just please see the BET and NCAAT through!)

It was just fine for The Squid.

UMass’ last NCAA tourney win was the game to get to the Final Four when Camby was there in 1996! They have been awful. But they have a brand new hoops facility and the A10 is a good league to start in. Will be interesting if Kimani is pursued.

Wait, UMass got a NCAA tournament win? Are you sure? It doesn’t appear in the record books.

Hopefully Castle is fully bought in on Hurley then. Not worried about him going with Kimani, but I do worry that Georgia or Auburn come calling

I wouldn't worry about Georgia. They're so bad

Okay so here’s what the UMass source guys are saying on the twitter spaces. They think that Kimani’s agent was the one who leaked this to try to get his name out there for some other jobs. And they used BLauds to leak it because “he’s a dope who would go along with it” lol
Blauds is a stenographer. If you "leaked" to him that UMass was about to hire Phil Jackson, he'd report it. Guy is an absolute hack, and I cannot believe people here are taking him seriously.

This isn't even about the UMass suggestion. Kimani is a hot HC candidate, and UMass is a solid first HC job. It wouldn't shock me if he ended up getting it. But Mark Blaudschun is never going to break any real news for the rest of his "career."

Didn't Blauds say we were going to hire Mark Whipple as our coach like a day before we hired Jim Mora

I think we all realize how great Kimani is, but I think the A-10 is a great starting place for him. When he was at Minnesota, they made the tournament twice and never made it out of the first weekend, and UConn still hasnt made it out of the first weekend here.

He has great potential but I dont think his resume warrants a P5 job right now.

I think a lot of people don't think he is going to walk into a P5 job (except probably Pitt!) but I am among those who think that there are non P5 schools that are more attractive than UMass.

I dont understand the Minnesota and UConn statement - was he HC at either? This isn't the NFL/NCAA Football where ACs have very specific groups of players to concentrate upon and evaluate based on that group's performance. Whether a MBB team advances is more weighted on the HC's performance.

He did coach UConn to a victory over Nova,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

UMass, or most A10 programs really, would be a perfectly appropriate starting point for Kimani. I think URI has some advantages over UMass. High profile assistants are practically bulletproof as long as they stay in that role. They get tons of credit and nothing is their fault. Kimani is an absolute star, and he deserves a shot to run his own program. It’s also fair to say nothing is a guarantee. I personally think he would excel, but it has to be the right starting spot.

I don't know why I have a soft spot for UMass. The underdog, I suppose. Potential regional rivalry in multiple sports. D1 football and neighboring flagship. It's an uphill battle but so wasn't UCONN's path to the BE domination. As mentioned earlier, UMass has an updated facility. With a lotta luck UMass could be the best destination in the A-10. Oh shut up, I said could...

Wait until next week to see what is even open to say he can do better than UMass. Might actually be his best option and currently it's the best fit.
UMass is the kiss of death for any coach.

I know folks hate it but IF this move was to happen - I would love to see a UMaine, UVermont, URI, UMass pre-season NE tourney.

Cal is doing pretty good for himself and he's got his buddy bruiser back so I'd venture that he isn't dead. Travis Ford seems to be doing alright, upgraded from UMass. Kellogg made the mistake of sticking around for too long. Really, only Lappas ended his coaching career there.

Just curious to all y'all's opinion: Would Kamani be a viable candidate for a "major college" (as opposed to mid-major) job like: Georgetown, Maryland, Nebraska, Penn State, Georgia, etc? I tend to think so. Thoughts?

It would be seen as a huge and unnecessary risk because his lack of head coaching experience. It has happened before, but those are usually special circumstances (a succession plan, an ex nba player, famous alum). Not impossible but not likely.

Doubtful, the hot coaching candidates tend to be the mid major head coaches that win games in the tournament or at least make the tournament. For example Dan Hurley at URI or Jim Calhoun at Northeastern. The A10 would be a great landing spot for Kamani.
