Don Brown left MD because he didn’t want to coach with RE. Kill was suggested to be OC at UConn by AD David Benedict.

Watched the game. Tyler P is a very talented QB. Strong arm, threw pretty well. He is a very good runner. He is better than anything we have put back there recently.

He's good. UMess isn't. The defense gives up huge play after huge play. They lose this game except they won the TO battle 3-0.

Watched the game as well.

NMST is not good. They have no real passing game. Kept doing QB power on short yardage and getting no where. The starting QB was so bad, they brought in the backup QB in the 2nd quarter, and rotating them in the second half. Both lines aren't good. Defense looked slow. 2/3 of the points in the game came in the 4th quarter when everyone was gassed from playing in the NM heat.

Taisun P impressed me. Him and their Arizona WR transfer, Simpson. Those two were the only two people doing anything on offense. Was wondering why NM didn't just double Simson, who again was the only person doing something on offense. Can't stress how bad NMST is at defense. They had a spy for Taisun and the spy just whiffs all the time against him. UMass defense has size up front, but that's about it. They were slow. Most of UMass' positive offense seems to come from RPO plays and Taisun got better and more accurate as the game went on. Taisun is a massive upgrade for them at QB. +5 using Phil Steele language.

I thought Tyler Phommachanh looked like a gamer last night. Not a great passer, but didn't make mistakes and he was a solid runner. He passed for 192 yards (11 for 17) and ran for 96 yards. I think they said before the game that Tyler Phommachanh won a close QB competition because he found a way to move the chains.

NMSU had more yards, but lost the turnover battle 3-0 which was the difference in the game.

I thought UMass looked better than last year and it looks like they have 26 P5 transfers on the roster.

UMass got a bunch of Arizona transfers this year, as well as other P3/4/5 transfers. Honestly they looked good last night. Taisun P. made plays down the stretch with his arm and his legs. It's only one game but they look a lot better. Won't be an easy game for us in Amherst but it's a long way off. We'll see.

Many pre-season rankings had UMass at the bottom, #133. I knew that was wrong and I'm just a casual observer of college football. Who are these guys that rank teams?

NMSU was 7-6 last year, including a win over Bowling Green in the Quick Lane Bowl. They started 0-4 and 1-5 before going 6-1 the rest of the way, including a sound thrashing of fading Liberty in Lynchburg. Prior to that, they were one of worst teams in D1 - 2-10 in 2021, 1-1 in the spring of 2021 after cancelling the 2020 season, 2-10 in 2019 and 3-9 in 2018. Like UConn, they were a feel good, turnaround story last year.

Don Brown is a very good coach, but he does not have the talent to hang with us. Give me UConn 34 UMass 17
