How Does Uconn Rank Among America's Best Colleges?

They rank UConn in a tie for #20 among public schools nationwide, and tied for #60 among all schools. Both those rankings are down slightly from last year.

But, on the bright side, there's this:

"Notable alumni of the University of Connecticut include WNBA star Sue Bird; George Harrison, former senior vice president at Nintendo; and David Lee, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics." Go Sue!

Here are the criteria that U.S. News and World Report uses in its rankings. As a lifelong educator, I do not recognize these criteria as having much to do with what one learns in the classroom. This is in no way meant to knock UConn: on the contrary, it's meant to say that great education (and crappy education) happens everywhere, and this ranking system has as much validity as the so-called "power rankings" at the beginning of an NFL season.

The indicators used to capture academic quality fall into a number of categories: graduation and first-year student retention rates, assessment by administrators at peer institutions, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, graduation rate performance and, for National Universities and National Liberal Arts Colleges only, high school counselor ratings of colleges.
