UConn women's basketball summer availability: 6/24/25 (merged)

2 new players, both are very well spoken, both know exactly what they give and get from basketball. Both after only a few short weeks already speak of UCONN, coaches, players and tradition with respect and both mentioned they are already loving where they are. So far everything is full speed ahead, 2 transfers that will leave a mark in the story of Husky Nation. Two new players that will forever be part of the greatest women's basketball program in history. Two new players whose lives will forever be enriched and rewarded, UCONN WBB has that effect.
 
Serah is really funny and sweet tempered. I loved how she talked about how she already knew a lot about her new teammates from social media. But that it was really good to find how that matches up to who they are in person.

On a couple of occasions she seemed on the verge of saying how nice it’s been playing with better players. And then she pulled back. I imagine she doesn’t want to hurt any feelings back in Wisconsin. The combination of honesty and kindness is compelling. This team will stick together and she’ll be one of the glue players.
 
I've never heard a player talk faster than Kayleigh LOL. I can understand why she said she wants to work on playing at different speeds (she said she usually plays at 1 speed - FAST). :p

But both the newbies are very mature, well spoken, excited to be here, and as @MooseJaw said, both of them are already immersed in the UConn experience, and I think both will be fan favorites. Couldn't be more excited to see ALL our newbies play, but especially these 2 so far!!

I thought it was interesting when asked about leadership, Kayleigh specifically mentioned Azzi, Caroline (drawing up plays and teaching), and Ash, but not KK. KK is so vocal and outgoing - it just surprised me - but great to see the more "quiet" players really embracing leadership roles!!!
 
I had expressed the opinion that KK would not only be starting but would assume a leadership role and was met with some resistance. While I realize Azzi is not a coach and has minimum say in who starts and who plays, I think she has enough knowledge of the team to voice her opinion.

We all have opinions, but the one that counts on this team is still Geno. And, even though Azzi said the words, what else was she expected to say at this time? KK is the starting PG at this time. It's June! And she will be the starting unless Geno, not Azzi, decides otherwise.

If you read my post you would realize that I stated that Azzi was not a coach. I also have no doubts that Geno talks to his players, especially the seniors, to get their impute and that is one of the things that help him reach his decisions. And I think that anyone who has ever followed the Boneyard realizes that Geno makes the final decisions.

And here I foolishly thought Geno had the last say so on starters. ;)
 
Yoiu would think that Azzi and Caroline would be the two principal leaders of the team based on their seniority. As a point guard, KK is also a logical third leader in general. Kayleigh will also be one when she is on the floor as the PG in terms of setting up and running the offense. She did it at USC so she will do it here also to the same extent that KC did it last year.

I think there are a few important differences between Kayleigh and Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn had more experience (3 full years) vs Kayleigh's one year, and KC played under Carla, who runs a system closer to Geno's than Lindsay's, so the learning curve was less steep for KC (plus KC is really smart, having gotten into Princeton.) K9 will get her minutes, but I expect KK to start for the foreseeable future.
 
No one is suggesting that Kayleigh as a sophomore is the same as Kaitlyn as a 5th year senior, or that she will start over KK. I totally disagree if you think that when Kayleigh is in, she will not be running the plays, starting the offense etc. as a true point guard. She will be. She did it last year when she was in the game at USC. She is a very good player, with better all around offensive skills than KK as of the end of last year. I also don't think you have to be a Princeton graduate to learn our offense. I bet K9 has it pretty much down pat already. Please don't underestimate her or automatically relegate her to "her minutes". She is a good defender also and will grow as the season progresses and be a very solid contributor to our team's successes. Did anyone think that KC was going to be a WNBA player in January besides KC? Look what she became.

I don't know if this question/comment is going to pass muster...so here goes.
There's a UConn "team/staff" member that Kayleigh looks just like (IMO). She sits at the scorers table, usually the closest chair to Geno. She is also the person that lines up the different game interviews. I did know her name and title (Communication Director?) at some point but not any more.
She and Kayleigh could almost be identical twins.

Geno is an interesting coach in that he is not be hesitant to play transfers like Chen or Lou Senechal at critical moments, trusts their instincts to take critical shots and take on the best competitive players. Similar to what we saw in Chen last year, most transfers get quicker and more confident under his leadership. Will be interesting to see how Kayleigh progresses in the upcoming 3 years.
