UConn WHOC 2024-2025

That’s crazy. Win the regular season. Get upset by a perennial power in the tourney and not get a bid? That stinks

I had a feeling that was gonna happen. HEA women are not as strong as the men nationally.

From Dom Amore’s Sunday short takes:

-> *It was a disappointing end for the UConn women’s hockey team, eliminated by perennial powerhouse Northeastern in the Hockey East semifinals Wednesday, but UConn will be back in contention. Earlier that day, Chris MacKenzie was named the conference coach of the year for the second year in a row, and Claire Murdoch was freshman of the year. Standout goalie Tia Chan, with more eligibility from her year off playing for China in the Olympics, is coming back for another season. It’s time for the NCAA Tournament to expand from 11 to 16 teams like the men have. Hockey East should not be a one-bid league. <-

16 of the 64 men's D1 teams make their tourney (25%). 11 of the 44 women' teams make their tourney. Also 25%.

HE men were 75-29-3 outside the conference (.715). Women were 29-34-2 (.462): 13-21-1 vs ECAC, 0-10-0 vs WCHA.

That 0-10 needs to spike up. A lot.

So the Hockey East bid goes to BU who will play my alma mater Clarkson in Madison at 7 pm on Thursday. Winner to play Wisconsin on Saturday. I am saved a rooting decision but I would have much preferred a UConn vs Clarkson matchup. Next year.

I agree, 16 teams is not happening until more schools have women's programs. The NCAA rule is quite clear. No more than 25% of the teams in the tournament. In fact, with AIC dropping back to D-2, I think the men;s side will be potentially losing a berth if their numbers don't increase again. Guessing though that with the house settlement increasing football roster sizes, there will be more women's hockey teams formed as the Title 9 response.

To your point, the ECAC's RS 4th place team just beat HE's RS 2nd place team. From the box score it looks like the game was over after the first period when Clarkson out shot BU 13-3 and took a 2-0 lead. Periods 2 and 3 it looks like Clarkson played defensively, something they will have to do on Saturday if they are gonna have any chance against Wisconsin. I kinda doubt anyone is gonna beat the Badgers though. I think the WCHA is on a different level having seen Minnesota last year in Durham.

Well, the WFF is set. About as expected. Cornell and three WCHA teams from the B1G. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio State. The latter three all big football schools with tons of NIL available. Three schools in the House Settlement, one not. Guessing this will be the model for the next few years.

Meanwhile in the Minneapolis' Ridder Arena, a replay of last year's Championship game. Wisconsin Badgers coached by former Whalers' defenseman Mark Johnson vs the Ohio State Buckeyes. Odds heavily favor the Badgers to flip last year's script.

It is looking like the B1G football schools with obscene amounts of NIL available, will be dominating women's hockey for the foreseeable future.

The national championship game today was quite amazing. OSU led for most of the game, but UW tied it up with 18 seconds left. 2:49 into OT the Badgers won it. Yes, they flipped last year's script, but it was really really difficult.
