UConn vs the Dead

Speaking of foggy memories, I remember being at one show in Hartford sometime in the 80s and I kept trying to sneak onto the floor, the dead started playing women are smarter and I just went for it but by the time I got to the floor the security guards were all over me dragged me across the floor underneath the Civic Center and out the back door. A lot of great shows in Hartford snd New Haven. Miss those days for sure

I also have to mention that the Loser from 5/8 is one of my favorite versions
Loser’s one of my favorite tunes. Check out Englishtown 9/3/77 and New Haven 7/31/71.

That last show also has a fun China Cat —> Rider.

I remember that week well. Working in Hartford, having lunch at Howard Johnson's which was packed with Dead Heads

One of them fancied himself a life coach, advising everyone what NOT to eat, including eggs.

Then this professional advisor went on to say he hasn't seen his wife and kid in six months, but he was going to pick them up in Buffalo on his way to the concert in Toronto (something like that)

Obviously words I can never forget. Oh to be a Dead Head

Just queued up Englishtown, set list looks killer thanks

Here is something Roger Catlin failed to mention in his comparison, the Grateful Dead from 1980 to 1990 had more sell outs at HCC than the UConn Huskies. Let that sink in

5/10/80 - (my first GD show ended up at 354 )
3/14/81
4/17,18/82
10/14,15/83
10/14,15/84
4/3,4/86
3/26,27/87
4/3,4,5/88
3/18,19/90

17 shows saw them all.

That was 4/3/88. There. I filled in your memory for you. :-)

I remember the Dead avoiding Hartford for a stretch because the cops liked to hassle the Deadheads. Was that the year they came back? Anyone remember the whole story?

So yeah that was 3 night run in April 88 that caused a ruckus as the city was inundated for 4 days with people pitching tents in Bushnell Park They came back once more for 2 shows in March of 90 but here's the thing: The 90 shows were not announced and put on sale with the rest of the tour, to try to keep the crowds down they sold the tickets the week of the show and the band was advertised as "Formerly the Warlocks" they weren't billed as the Grateful Dead. It didn't keep people away, and they weren't allowed back again.

Not hard too believe since the basketball team did not start getting better until they won the NIT in 88

I worked in Hartford during those shows in a suit & tie. I'd go to Bushnell at lunch and compare notes on the previous night's show. Fun times.
Did deadheads avoid you when you were wearing a suit and tie? Multiple times during the 80s, I tried to get tickets to various concerts like the Stones in 81. Many concert goers thought I was a narc even though I had taken off my tie and was in my 20s with longish hair.

I’m really surprised so many deadheads here can remember details of the shows they went to
I'd be interested in learning first Dead show from this particular population.

Mine was October 1972, Rochester, NY, kicking off with "Bertha," just like the live album that played out through dormitory and frat house windows during the first few weeks of school. NRPS opening.
10/24/79 - Springfield Civic Center

avoided - no. surprised yes - which evaporated when comparing notes.

My all time favorite eyes of the world. The Mississippi 1/2 step killer too.

Just finished listening to Englishtown - great show! Enjoyed every song but that Friend of the Devil was the highlight for me!

Go see any version of Phil & Friends rather than D&C. ;)
Just announced Westville Music Bowl 7/23/23.

Not a huge fan of any of the current lineups. Probably would give the nod to Billy and the Kids if I had to choose a favorite. Have not seen a Phil show in probably 20 years. Saw my only D&C show couple years ago. I don't get out much.

I saw Phil last summer in Bridgeport at the begining of his short summer tour. His band included Warren Haynes, John Molo and Amy Helm. Really good show. Nice varied setlist. A highlight was Amy singing "Atlantic City" in the style of her dad's band did in the early 90's.

That’s amazing, didn’t know Amy Helm was playing with Phil. She does great supporting vocals on Levon’s albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt, the latter of which has his tremendous version of Tennessee Jed

Last summer, Amy only did certain shows. We lucked out with the Bridgeport show.

Nice thong!

I will disagree. I saw Phil in the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago and it was lifeless. A 25 minute Shakedown Street? No thanks. And since, I've read "Fare Thee Well". Screw Phil Lesh.

August West mentioned above but yeah, i've heard its mostly his wife that's caused a lot of issues around Phil and the rest of the Dead.
