I think for us Uconn fans, we’ve been speaking of the potential of this team. It’s been frustrating to collapse in big games, or simply come up short. We were losing some credibility in this perceived potential.

Today, the team showed that potential for the first time, on a huge stage. I think it proves that at our best, we can compete with anybody. South Carolina isn’t as dominant this year, evidenced by 2 prior losses. But this win should give us confidence that come March, we play to our potential, and we can beat anybody.
We have Azzi back and in the. Prior game and a half she showed she’s back. Griff back too. We are blossoming now. Geno has backed off a little bit and is letting them play. We were in the 3 games we lost without Azzi and Griff being up to speed. Noe it would be a different story

Did Azzi play in the Notre Dame game ? I forget
I forget too. This is probably one of those things that are lost in the sands of time. A thousand years from now, archaeologists may unearth some obscure artifact that could shed light on this mystery. :p:D

So, I’ve watched the UConn / USC game three times now, not including the highlights. Seriously, do I need an appointment with a shrink !
Nah, I’ve watched the replay 3 times now, too. I don’t watch the live action in big games cause I just get too freaked out.

What I really liked about Ashlynn’s scores, was the timeliness of those points. Azzi was 2 for 10 in that half of play. Paige hit the first 3-pt bucket but was then struggling to find the net as well. It is during those exact times when we really need Ash to make her shots as another shooting guard. And exactly what we received out of her yesterday.

Also what certainly helped during that same period of time was that El Alfy was going off as well. Inside / outside play to keep the offense rolling is so much better than 100% relying on the deep jump shot, particularly when those shots aren’t going in. The inside threat opens up the deep shot, and in kind that opens up the lane. Having a Center that can score is so helpful.

Those two really carried us through in a point when the game was still a game! Without their production early, this could have been completely different.

We all know she didn't play and ND just doubled and tripled Paige.

Paopao in presser, no respect: "It was very much selfinflicted." Stupid thing to say.
I’ll give Paopao a pass, as I will for Dawn and a number of SC linked bloggers who all appear to come down on the side that, “SC wasn’t ready and played terribly,” while not really giving credit to UConn for a great effort. I will give them a pass because I think they are all in shock. It was pointed out that all 4 ESPN Gameday hosts picked SC to win. Nothing in UConn’s resume this season indicated that the Huskies could go into Columbia before a sellout crowd and upset the defending national champions.

I actually kind of like the fact that nobody from SC is giving UConn or Geno the credit they deserve. I hope that continues all the way to a 12th national championship… :)

Looking at the season as a whole, both UConn and South Carolina have three losses:

1. UConn's losses are to Notre Dame, Southern Cal, and Tennessee.
2. South Carolina's losses are to UCLA, Texas, and UConn.

I think most objective observers would say that UConn's loss to Tennessee was more of a "bad loss" than any of South Carolina's losses, so that might be a reason to say that South Carolina has a "better" record. On the other hand, UConn didn't lose AT HOME to anyone by 29 points or anything close to that (biggest adverse MOV was 11 to Notre Dame, and that was on the road), so that would be an argument to say that UConn has the "better" record.
And, SO????? Just kidding... I just got a kick out of your analysis.... on the One hand SC can be called the "better team"... but on the Other Hand, UCONN can be called the "better team".... I pick the Hand that has UCONN assigned to it! ;);););)

This game was amazing to watch. So much difference between the team I saw today and the team I saw play Tennessee. Post play was great, 48 to 29 rebounds, when that was a strong point for South Carolina and a weakness for UConn, or so I thought. The ease that Tennessee found driving to the basket certainly was not easy for South Carolina. Remarkable coaching job to get these young ladies ready for the big test. Can UConn win the NC, we will see but to me that team we saw yesterday is NC caliber!

I said Shade had an above average game. Nothing is ever gonna top her IowaSt game.
But this may have been her 2nd best.

Also eye roll on everyone's Paige comments. IT WASNT A CRITICISM.
Would you be happier if I said "The only way we win a big game is if every single player plays out of their minds." ?
I understood… but it looks like I may have been the only one!

She was talking about their effort and mental toughness but, sure, criticize the young woman whose team just got demolished and was undoubtedly emotional. At least she had the fortitude to speak with the press.

"We just got punked today. It was very much embarrassing," Paopao is quoted saying in an X post from WACH Fox reporter Claire Foley. "We know that that's not who we are. It was very much self-inflicted, as well. We've just got to do a better job giving effort and being mentally and physically tough."

UConn is #1 in NET.

Also, let's give credit to Dawn Staley for scheduling a game with highly ranked UCONN in the middle of SC's gruelling SEC schedule. She is devoted to promoting the Women's game at the risk of lowering her team's ranking. Kudos to Kim Caldwell, too.
The other SEC teams refuse to play non- conference games once their conference schedule begins.

I mean, both can be true. But no disputing it was the best performance I've watched from UConn in a long, long time. Otoh, I pump the brakes a little because UConn can look really good when it shoots well from 3 and look terrible when it doesn't. The good thing yesterday (maybe) was that UConn didn't shoot particularly well from 2 and still won handily. Great performance for sure.

Sorry Oldude... I cannot accept an excuse from ANY Team that is supposed to defeat another by many, many points, "that it was self-inflicted" or that "we weren't ready for them" or anything else. And, when UCONN gets whupped, Geno doesn't use those excuses, he admits that the opponent was just the better team today. I coached a lot of youth baseball (up to 18yrs old)...and when my Teams were playing flat, with no hustle or energy in their step, I didn't just let it go on...and take what comes. As the Coach, I had a responsibility to get them back on track... sometimes I could. IF SC wasn't ready for a historically tough Women's Basketball Program with a Hall of Fame Coach and the most National Championships of any NCAAW program, then Dawn and her Assistant Coaches need to give their paychecks for game day and the days leading up to it back to the University... It is their JOBS to get the Team ready.

As I said in another thread ("Just Thinkin")... SC was overconfident from the get-go. Heck, they were probably overconfident during their preps in the days before the game... yep, UCONN lost to Tennessee...how could they possibly beat SC???? The Team with 10 High School All Americans that Kim Mulkey complained about. SC came out overconfident on game day...and so did Dawn. No one in that building wearing SC colors (I saw a small contingent of UCONN shirts behind our Team's bench) believed UCONN would come within 20 points of the Gamecocks. Then, the game started, and not only did UCONN NOT get out of their way and let them score, UCONN punched them in the mouth (figuratively of course), and didn't let up on the gas for the entire 40 minutes... UCONN came READY and HUNGRY!

I actually jumped out of my recliner and shouted YES and Clapped my hands vigorously as Ash hit her 1st 3... I scared the dog and myself. and I couldn't stop the rest of the game...normally I'm quite mellow.

LOL.... When Ashley hit her 1st three pointer, ESSP showed Dawn Staley.
She had a frustrated look that said, "Oh no, another three point shooter. How can we cover allof them??"

One ironic thing is that if I told you Paige had a game where she had as many turnovers as made baskets and UConn would blow out South Carolina anyway, you'd probably say I was dreaming. Otoh, she had 7 rebounds and 10 assists to show she's not just a scorer, she's a bball player.
