UConn vs. Northeastern @ J.O.C. (4/10/19 @ 3p)

From yesterday’s notes:

>>Chris Winkel recorded a hit to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 12 games. The junior also recorded his team-leading ninth multi-RBI game<<

Geez - He’s batting .263 w/ 30 RBIs...

Winkel's main problem is that he doesn't get on base all that much. Still, with all the people that get on base in front of him, the hits he gets often count for something, and he does hit for some power so that helps as well. And even when UConn has a few sub .200 hitters in the lineup, Winkel is well above that mark.

Top 4th, Dunlop strands a runner at 2B. 4-1 UConn. Dunlop doing well today, with 5 strikeouts and 59 pitches so far.

.-.
We have looked extremely sharp so far this week. Very encouraging stuff.

Wonder why they are pulling Dunlop already? Surprised they wouldn't try to get at least 5 out of him.

Top 5th, a lead off single and Polonia takes over for Dunlop. I'm a bit surprised Dunlop comes out this quickly as well. Figure that the coaching staff wants to get Polonia in there with a decent lead to work off of.

Top 5th Pat Winkel throws out a base stealer for the first out.

.-.
Prato starts a double play to end the top of the 5th. 6-1 UConn.

Bottom 5th, Chiovitti pinch hitting for Toppa, who had been hit by a pitch in the arm earlier in the game.

Top 6th, freshman Jake Sanderson comes in to pitch. Another pitcher Penders wants to get some work with a decent lead for him to work with.

Chase Gardner warming up.

Two walks for Sanderson, and in comes Gardner to face a lefty hitter. Runners on the corners.

One out wild pitch with the bases loaded brings in a run for Northeastern to make it 6-2.

.-.
My goodness, nothing like having a 5 run lead and then just hand the other team free base after free base.

Jake Wallace is fresh; do we bring him in now if needed and have Caleb close the game?

Gardner walks a batter to load the bases, then gets the next two hitters to end the top of the 6th. 6-2 UConn.

Oh well; I agree with giving Sanderson a shot anyway.

Got to give shots to guys like Sanderson in the midweek when the opportunity presents itself. It's how you develop young pitchers. Just didn't work out today, but UConn still has a 4 run lead.

.-.
Jake Wallace is fresh; do we bring him in now if needed and have Caleb close the game?

I agree with Chris Jones. Wurster, Dandeneau, and Wallace will all probably get 1 inning unless UConn goes on a scoring spree in the late innings. In that case, Santos and Mayock could get some work.

UConn goes down in order in the 6th. Avery Santos in to start the 7th, giving another guy who hasn't pitched much some work. UConn still has a four run lead, and Penders has a lot of confidence in Wurster, Dandeneau, and Wallace to snuff out any trouble.

Wurster warming up.

Offense has died the past couple innings.

Santos in for the top of the 7th. I wpuld go Santos / Wurster / Wallace after CJ threw so many pitches last weekend.
