- UConn vs. DePaul Game Thread -

DePaul doesn't have a bench in the conventional sense. They have only 10 players who all play throughout the game, hence the mismatch at the end of the game
Yes, but this happens every time the bench gets into the game, not just against DePaul.

In 2 min 58 sec Depaul cut the deficit from 50 to 34.
Were our subs (Z excluded) making a statement?
"We want to study for the finals and get better grades."

BatCam didn't appear to have that deer in the headlights look about her. Good sign!

No she didn't. No one expected her to. She's not a freshman. She's had two years of exposure to D1 WCBB, and she's 20 years old. She looked good for the brief amount of time she was in there.

The Blue Devils were suppose to be the quintessential three point specialist coming in to the game. I commented in another thread that they did not gain that reputation against the kind of defense they were going to see from UConn, I was right. Just the opposite occurred. UConn flipped the script. The Blue Devils got a dose of their own medicine. It was the Huskies that put on a show of how to make shots behind the arc. Lots of DePaul's shots were either blocked or changed because of UConn's tight unrelenting defense.

The game started out fast with each team trading baskets in the first quarter, but slowed to a crawl by the middle of the third quarter. DePaul realized at that point UConn was not going to give them any open looks at a three point shot, in addition to being down 20+ points and falling. They were reduced to playing "conventional" basketball, and not relying solely on making 3's.

They made a statement and the staff was taking notes

Assists on 34 of 41 baskets!! Speaks volumes. Next game is on CBS/sports net, then we start a long stretch of games on SNY and ESPN3.

Doesn't stop the off season message board chatter about improved depth though.

There is improved depth. Last year was 5 1/2 players (CD the 1/2). This year it’s 6.5. And there are Players like Canara, Irwin, bent who could be ok i think if pressed into action.

This game was a good way to go on a 10 day break. UConn made it over the century mark for their first time this season. Batouly made it on the court. Hopefully, she will work her way into the rotation.

Incredible game. UConn turned it up and blew DePaul out. Katie Lou with 20, and Gabby looked like her old self in the second half. When they get it rolling, they will be an overwhelming team. Why is Molly Bent playing ahead of the freshmen AEH and Mikayla Coombs? When she first got in she ran to a spot right near Megan Walker. She has no confidence handling the ball and commits fouls that she never should commit. At least if the freshmen commit a foul, they are still learning.

I can see why Geno is only going 7 deep until garbage time. So much for improved depth this year maybe.

There is a difference with UCONN’s players and other teams. The level of the rotation is so high, when you don’t play as much it’s hard to reach it. I think most other teams starters would be in the same position as our bench.

I never understand how our top 5 to 7 players are better than everyone else's, but our bench can't beat anybody's bench. Don't they go to the same practice as the starters? Are they paying attention? I just want them to preserve the lead, and not give away 10 to 20 points of the lead in the last few minutes. Yuck!
I think our freshmen have more to digest than for typical D1 teams. Takes longer, but they're better when they come out at the end of the process.
