UConn v. UMass - April 18th @ J.O.C @ 3p

As mentioned in the Quinnipiac game thread, PJ Poulin scheduled to start for UConn according to Chris Jones.

Have to win these games. Comfortably would be a welcome change

Thank goodness Winkel bailed out the offense. Man on 3rd and 1 out, man on 3rd and no outs and we struggle and have to sweat to get the run in. We just have no offense. Struggles!

Chris Jones mentioned that Lambrecht was scratched from the starting lineup about 15 minutes before game time, which is why Yahn is at 2B today. Jones didn't seem to know why Lambrecht was scratched.

Huskies add a tally in the fifth, an RBI groundout for Feldstein gives #UConn a 4-1 lead. Trevor Holmes coming on for the sixth!

Holmes fires a quick 1-2-3 sixth inning! #UConn 4, UMass 1

UConn threatening in B6 - Pitching change coming for UMass.

So much for the threat.

End 6: Huskies waste a chance to score in the sixth. Still 4-1 #UConn lead. Holmes back out for the 7th

Another 1-2-3 inning for Holmes. He has 4 strikeouts in two innings.

RBI singles by Bergmann and Prato make it 9-1 with Huskies still up in the 7th.

Winkel gets his first three hit game as a Husky.

Today's starter PJ Poulin threw 5 very good innings, probably his best pitching performance as a Husky. He set career highs for innings and pitches thrown in a game, and also came up with 5 strikeouts, another career high. He seemed to have his control throughout his pitching stint today. It's a funny thing, not too long ago it seemed that the midweek starters for UConn were a wide open affair, and we were all moaning about it. Not so anymore, as Ronnie Rossomando is firmly anchored as one midweek starter, and there is no reason to think that after today that Poulin won't continue to get the nod as the second midweek starter.

Top 8th, Aaron Hill is now at 2B!! Jacob Wallace is in to pitch with an 11-1 lead.

A shut down inning would have been special... Wallace gives up 2 runs so far.

That's all. B8 - 11-3.

11-3 going into the bottom of the 8th. Freshman Jacob Wallace was getting important innings out of the bullpen at the beginning of the year, a time when Coach Penders talked about him as a possible closer candidate. Wallace has been largely ineffective of late, as evidenced by Penders getting him work in a late game mop up role today. That's some turnaround.

Sounds like a good effort today. We needed that offensive outburst.

We still make stupid errors and suck with runners in scoring position, but today was a good development.

This is more like it for mid week games. Offense comes alive....pitching can be more agressive...easy win. Weekend series stressful enough nice to have a breather!!!
