I rewatched the UConn-Texas game from 3 years ago, just to remind myself of where the team has been.
This was a very thin season, with almost zero room for error once Paige's injury thinned out the roster. Geno added Inês just to have another guard, since technically it was just Nika and Azzi and maybe Lou in a pinch. This game was Azzi's initial submission to the NPOY committees -- 32 pts on 13-21, 4-7 from 3 and basically controlling the game from beginning to end. Sonya Morris had a great game too, 21 pts on 7-18 shooting and 5-10 from 3. But Azzi was the whole show.
Watching this game, you can feel good about the girls' resilience and sturdiness. But everything rode on Nika's shoulders, as the subsequent Princeton game made harrowingly clear. It's easy to see why Geno is so determined to have a lot of guards on the roster.
