Our pitching will determine how far this team goes this year. It’s been said before, but Cooke having outings like this really improves our chances for sureTop 6th, 1st 2 batters reach base on an error by Rispoli followed by a single that puts runners on the corners. Cooke strikes out the next 3 batters to have a scoreless inning. 11-4 UConn. Cooke now has 6 strikeouts in this game and has thrown 60 pitches.
Cooke, Finn and Shaw in my mind all have roles that might be a little bit fungible at this point in the season. All 3 have been super important as multi-inning bulk relievers on weekends but any of the 3 could be needed in a different role in the post season when a 4th or even 5th starter become more valuable. Having some of the other bullpen guys turn a corner recently could free up one or more of these guys as potential starters but I’m sure it will be a real balancing act deciding whether to bring them out of the pen or hold onto one of them for potential game 4 or 5.Biller and Lane continue to improve each week. Cooke probably is not available this weekend, which is not optimal. Pitching availability should be good for the rest of the staff.
Peters I think, is a good fit in short burst, 3 or 4 outs. Caruso throws strikes, he's a good spot guy. Need someone else to emerge.Cooke, Finn and Shaw in my mind all have roles that might be a little bit fungible at this point in the season. VanEmon's issues are mental I believe. Velo has been fine but he is literally throwing it all over the place. Confidence is shot and his body language is not good when he's been out there. Maybe they get up enough these next 3 weekends when you can give him another shot and see if he can get his confidence back.Yup, after a slow start last season, Van Emon did show improvement as the season progressed. Based on that I would like to see him get a little more pitching time this season as he has shown success in the past.
With all the injuries that have happened with UConn players this season, I have to wonder if Van Emon has been nursing some sort of an injury as well, and if it is part of the reason for Van Emon not doing well this season.
