Top 5th, with 1 out 2 batters reach base off of Cinnella. A 1 out single drives in a run, 8-7 UConn with runners on the corners. Another single drives in a run to tie the game at 8. Cinnella comes out of the game, Sullivan comes in to pitch.

Get Cinella out already. Our middle relief pitching has no dependable arms. Complete collapse.

Top 5th, with 1 out, Sullivan hits a batter to load the bases. A double drives in 2 runs, 10-8 Blue Jays. Sullivan comes out of the game, Van Emon takes the mound.

Van Emon gets 2 strikeouts to strand 2 runners on base. 10-8 Blue Jays.

Nice little bit for Van Emon right there after a number of poor outings lately.

Ellison not fulfilling the projected role and I think Schild’s injury and lively arm is missed. Almost unknowingly. Before Cooke’s recent run his dependence by the coaching staff was really hurting them. Ellison had a major role early, similar in expectations.

Bottom 6th, with 2 outs, the UConn offense gets 2 singles by Morton and Padilla to put runners on the corners. They are left on base. 10-8 Creighton.

Top 7th, Van Emon has a scoreless inning after a no out single. 10-8 Creighton. A play review saved UConn from giving up another run.

Bottom 7th, with 2 out UConn offense gets a 1 out walk and a 2 out walk, but they are left on base. All 3 outs were strikeouts. 10-8 Creighton.

Another sobering reality. This closer who has absolutely shut us down throws the same as every pitcher we would face out of the ACC or SEC if we made the tourney.

Top 8th, a 1 out double followed by an infield single puts runners on the corners Van Emon comes out of the game, Afthim takes the mound.

A 1 out single drives in a run, 11-8 Creighton, with runners on the corners.

Another 1 out single drives in a run. 12-8 Creighton. A walk loads the bases. A fielders choice ground out brings in another run, 13-8 Creighton with runners on the corners. A single drives in another run, 14-8 Creighton.

A pick off at 3B by Garbowski ends the inning.

Now our closer not getting it done. Shocked to see that Afthim only as 17 innings total pitched all year. Seems to be under utilized. Maybe why he is a little rusty?

we give up a ton of runs... Two wins against Creighton sandwiched between two games where we give up a total of 30 runs! Penders and his staff have a lot of work to do...

Bottom 8th, after 2 strikeouts, a 2 out double by Padilla, but he is left on base. 14-8 Creighton.

Top 9th, after getting the leadoff hitter out, Afthim comes out of the game, Quinn takes the mound.

Quinn walks the first 2 batters he faces. Quinn comes out, Finnegan comes in to pitch.

After getting a strikeout, Finnegan gives up a wild pitch, so 2 runners in scoring position. Finnegan gets a fly out for the final out, no runs come in that inning. 14-8 Creighton.

Bottom 9th, with 2 out, Simmons pinch hits for Minick, and gets a triple. Shpur with an RBI infield single, 14-9 Creighton.

Game over, Creighton wins 14-9. At least UConn took the series.

As I’ve said, we’re in position to win the Big East regular season championship, let’s do it. But people have overrated this team based on our record against poor competition. We played 4 games this week against bubble level teams, at best, and gave us 39 runs. Thirty nine runs. I don’t care how good our pitching looks against teams that can’t hit — it’s not nearly good enough.

Whine over. We’re still one up on the Johnnies with 3 to play, and Butler is not a good team. Let’s do what we have to do.

Credit to Creighton. They had zilch to play for - especially down 7-0. Strange BE year. League is better? With a doable sweep next week, this team can match its best league record at 17-4. Bunch of tight wins.
