Top 6th, first 2 UConn batters get walks. Pitching change.

Broadhurst with a 1 out 3 run homer, UConn up 4-1. After the homer, Malcom with a 2 out walk and a Garbowski single puts runners on the corners. Padilla follows with an RBI single, 5-1 UConn, runners again on the corners before the inning ends.

Might have left 2 runners on base, but for a change it was a nice productive inning.

Bottom 6th, Joe Carrea comes in to pitch to start the inning.

.-.
Top 7th, Daniels with a leadoff walk, but is thrown out on a stolen base attempt for the first time this season. A scoreless inning for the UConn offense, 5-2 UConn.

Bottom 6th, a leadoff solo homer for UCLA, 5-2 the score. Carrea walks the next batter, and then gets the next 3 batters out leaving the runner at 3B. 5-2 UConn.

Bottom 7th, Carrea issues a leadoff walk, and comes out of the game. Braden Quinn comes in to pitch.

Quinn issues a 1 out walk after a balk, and then a batter reaches on a throwing error by Garbowski to load the bases. Quinn gets 2 strikeouts this inning on his way to stranding the bases loaded. 5-2 UConn.

Top 8th, with 2 out, Malcom gets his 3rd walk of the game, Drew Kron pinch runs for Malcom. Garbowski then picks up his 2nd single of the game, but nothing comes of this 2 out rally attempt. 5-2 UConn.

Bottom 8th, Quinn with a 1-2-3 inning with 2 strikeouts, 4 for his 2 innings of pitching. 5-2 UConn.

Chris Jones says that Afthim was warming up that inning, so I would not be surprised to see him come in to pitch the 9th.

What an effort by Braden Quinn…

Trip Report:
1) nice facility, sparse crowd. It was coolish but no wind and it didn’t get colder which saved the day. Was a long game For 5-2 but midweek lot of pitching changes. Wonder if savage‘s seat getting hotter at ucla great recruiting classes but haven’t made a super or won pac 12 since 2019.
Good: 1) I like the lineup it has some logic to it. I’d let that try to work now and see if that’s the going forward framework.
2) Quinn game ball really settled things down, threw well and against RHB too. Really dominated showed fight and emotion.
3) they actually had a rally with that 4 run inning with the Luke bomb (hardest ball I’ve seen hit live this year….(harder than UCSB guy off of Finn) and the Bry RBI Single
4) defense other than Broadhurst was pretty good
Bad:
1) Tammaro and both picked off. Unreal.
2) Broadhurst had his toughest game at 1B. On the 2 pickoff throws I assume he hasn’t had alot of reps with those he also dropped the throw on that swinging bunt.
3) Morton got doinked pretty hard in the head, seems ok. Also shpur got hit on the hand. They've dodged some bullets so far with Studley hit on hand over weekend those are dangerous.
4) Cookie started off well then it collapsed a la the way it used to with Sears. I think he threw 11 straight balls at one point. Really concerning. His motion isn’t anywhere near as complex as Sears. Bizarre.
5) Coe got the win I thought he was ok, Correa once again pays dearly for the mistake with the HR then has trouble putting batters away. He’s close. Just needs another small jump to be effective at the D1 level.

Good to get in the win column for the confidence alone. Good energy in the dugout all game long. They wanted this game. Let’s see if they can build on it. Back to Vegas but will try and catch rest of cali trip on tv, etc.

I think the benefits of playing a more competitive schedule are already paying dividends. To be sitting with an rpi of 50 and having only 4 wins out of 13 games says something. If the roster comes together and they get things figured out, and an at-large berth or AQ happen…having faced quite a few quality arms and bats will help when it matters most in June. Every tournament team does not have the Fla talent that was seen last year. I really hope these tougher more competitive schedules continue.

Nice win. Is Quinn moving to the weekend?
In an ideal world would prefer Quinn in bullpen especially with Van Emon now in rotation that would take another LH from pen. Quinn late in games against tough lefties is a nice option. Just a shame Ellison , sully and cookie can’t get anything going (yet). So I fully understand whatever happens , happens

It would hurt the bullpen moving Quinn, no doubt about it. But they may have found their weekend rotation. Quigley Van Emon Quinn. Coe/Cinnella both are lefties. Cooke/ Ellison not producing yet is a major problem. I think both should and will have bigtime roles this year…finding what that is will be challenging. Ellison seems uncomfortable in relief, maybe consider starting him idk. Cooke needs to find it. I like him in the pen but is He ok with the move…or is a demotion sorta speak the mentality. I hope not bc Cooke is needed overall as a staff. Sullivan, idk if it’s development or other.

Given how good Quinn was this past summer as a starting pitcher for Danbury, I was really looking forward to seeing how he would do this coming season. I said before that Quinn is going to get plenty of time on the mound, whether or not he comes out of the bullpen or if he ends up as a weekend starter. At this point I would like to see him as a starter, but we'll see what happens. I've been inclined to think that LHP Garrett Coe is better off coming out of the bullpen, but we'll see what happens as the season progresses.

Cooke had another bad appearance in the game last night, but I doubt the coaching staff has totally given up on him as he still shows the occasional flash of being good. Whatever the case, it certainly doesn't look like he will be a weekend starter at this point. I would guess he will get some brief appearances out of the bullpen to see if he is getting his control back, but right now that control has been pretty poor of late.
