UConn @ Top 15 ECU (Thur. 4/18 @6:30p, *Sat. 4/20 Double Header> Game 2 starting @ 9a followed by Game 3*)

Chris Jones sounds surprised to see Chris Winkel choking up on the bat. Still strikes out to end the inning.

Penders talked about wanting to see that after game 1. Can’t buy contact.

Seems that Penders has been talking about this sort of thing for the past week in post game interviews. All falls under the category of making adjustments.

Pitching has been good other than the 3rd.

The one thing you can say so far about this series is that against a highly ranked team in ECU, UConn is in these games. A little good luck for a change could go a long way. Of course, sometimes you have to make your luck.

I'm taking a big liking for Karl Johnson. I think it is possible that Jimmy Wang could be in line for a big jump in improvement next season, given his lack of experience in general. Of course, we'll have to see about that one.

We've all said it before, but someone like Moriarty needs to get a sac bunt down. Strikes out instead for the first out in the 6th.

Bullpen in general has been very good. The one thing hurting UConn this season is that they don't have the same quality weekend starting pitching that they have had in recent seasons. Even if Feole is on top of his game on Friday nights, the drop in quality after that is much more substantial than it has been in other recent years. Remember, Montgomerie in his last season here was a Saturday starter.

We are a bad offensive baseball team right now. We can't even score when given opportunities early. Bright side is we are still one good swing from a tie.

This game has been excruciating. ECU was excellent Thursday but crapped the bed today. We really needed to jump them and the offense failed miserably. At this point, I have lost faith in them.

The other thing is, an excellent team like ECU is going to make a scuffling offense like UConn look bad. As the old saying goes, you are never as good as you are on top of things, or as bad as you look when playing bad. Or something like that, I hope you all catch my derailed train of thought.

East Carolina gets a run in the bottom of the 6th to make it 4-2. Two out, Caleb Wurster coming in to face Packard. Still, a solid relief performance from Johnson.

Make that 5-2. That's a tough margin the way UConn's offense is going.

5-2 final. With how they played early, this was the game to beat ECU.

Gonna have to dig VERY deep now.

Thing is, Jeff Kersten has to be very sharp in the afternoon game, and he needs his fielders in back of him to be on top of their game as well. Otherwise, it could get pretty ugly with the ECU bats.

Lose the next one and we're under .500 in AAC play. Not good.

That could be a problem, although the RPI would still be in the neighborhood of 30, which is still good. Just have to hope they make up the AAC wins at home against Wichita State and USF, two teams down at the bottom of the conference standings this season.
