According to my wife who listened to the game (I was at work), Chris Jones on WHUS suggested that Winkel may have thought the ball was foul. Hopefully Winkel won't make that mistake again.
If that's the case it's a little more undstandable, but it's still a mental lapse. Aside from stealing bases this team has struggled early on the bases. Last Sunday they ran themselves out of the inning on 3 separate occasions, one of which was on Penders not the players. I expect this will get cleaned up as the season goes on.

The base running in the last game against Texas was atrocious to the point that it helped change the course of that game. Aside from that, I would disagree with you that this team has struggled on the bases. In my mind it really hasn't been all that bad this season aside from that one game. Their stolen base success has been very good. As far as getting thrown out on the bases, its seems to me that it has been much worse in previous years, where it would seem that UConn would have runners picked off base with regularity or having base runners get caught in rundowns on infield grounders with regularity, stuff that would send one of regular posters, @ATLDYKA, into posting fits.

Continuing the trend from yesterday's game, the UConn offense goes down quietly in order in the top of the 1st.

Problems for Montgomerie and the UConn defense in the top of the 1st. Wills gives up two walks, also hits a batter, an rbi single, and then Susi throws a ball into left field trying to throw out a runner stealing 3rd. Montgomerie then three strikeouts to close out the inning, as Stetson scores two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to give them the lead.

We have a bit of an adventure with Montgomerie tonight. His 2nd inning consists of two strikeouts, two walks, and no runs scored. 2-0 Stetson going into the top of the 3rd inning.

Husky offense comes to life in the 4th inning, highlighted by a Feldstein double and a Gnesda single both driving in runs. Huskies up 3-2 and are still up.

9th inning, Kenny Bergmann pinch hits for Toppa, and drives in a run with his first hit as a Husky. Winkel then lays down a safety squeeze to get another run in, with Winkel reaching base. Krueger comes up with an rbi single. Another run scores on an error (Stetson fielding has been on the shoddy side tonight). 9-3 UConn lead with Russell staying on to pitch the bottom of the 9th.

Russell strikes out the side, giving him 5 strikeouts on his relief stint. Russell gets the save, and UConn wins 9-3. UConn pitchers had 2o strikeouts on the night.
