My argument isn't about data use. The claim that, "a simpler fix that would improve the reliability of the data..." isn't accurate. As far as we know, the data is completely reliable. This just proposes a specific way of looking at to analyze player performance during specific time periods.Yes and no. The data is indeed a simple fact. But the way we try to use it is not. Comparisons across teams, projections of future production, and in short most of what fans like to do with data is vulnerable to noise in the data. And not accounting for differences between stats accumulated in blowouts introduces a lot of noise into the analysis.
