Gabby vs SC 2.jpeg

Two stats from last night's beat down of South Carolina tell us all we need to know.
1. Four UConn players scored 23, 20, 19 and 14 points and those same players had 14 assists.
2. A'ja Wilson shot 4-18 from the field (22%) and had 0 assists. All shoot, no pass.

Crisp passing and balanced scoring beat one-on-one basketball every time. Or, was it one-on-five.. Geno & company had a plan and worked it to perfection. Consider:
1. Tyasha Harris had 141 assists coming into the game. She had 2 last night & 4 turnovers.
2. Kia Nurse had more three-point baskets (5) than all of South Carolina (4).
3. UConn took 27 threes vs 10 for South Carolina.
4. Wilson had 6 offensive rebounds, so did Gabby..!
5. The Huskies made 12-13 free throws, 92%.
6. UConn had 18 assists, SC only had 6.
7. Gabby was Gabbulous..! 14 pts, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 6-8 from the field and 1 steal.:)

A'ja Wilson is a great player, but not well rounded. She scores and rebounds very well. She has 33 assists all season. Gabby has 102. Wilson was making shots at a 57% rate. She made 22% last night. She had a tough night shooting and South Carolina had no backup plan. Bianca Jackson had 20 points, but only 4 in the 1st half. UConn took away what South Carolina does well, game over.

Go Huskies..!!

Good stuff as always. I'll admit, I had to look up Bianca Jackson. She was ranked #43 coming out of HS by HG, so for her to have a game like that on national TV against UCONN was pretty incredible. I don't know what she's averaging for the year, but talk about a coming out party!

Well done David.

It's easier to make shots when you're down 30.

After games like this people always sound like we can do this every game if we only decide to play this way. However, the other team and the refs have to cooperate for this to occur. Generally, we have a very good shooting team and if left open can hit our open shots at a better rate than our opponents. But the teams that have given us the most trouble have physically mauled us and dared the refs to make all the calls. The refs don't and after awhile we get frustrated at being beat up. The texas game was a prime example. The refs let them push us around all game and use physical play to neutralize what we do well. It was hard to play against the other team and the refs. MissSt figured it had to physically dominate us to win the game and get some of our players in foul trouble. They did play a great aggressive defense that wore us down and we just didn't have the reserves to overcome it. I have to credit their defense for hurting our shot making. They didn't make it easy on us. This year we have more players on the bench so we can defend harder but getting our key players in foul trouble can still be a good strategy if the bench can't score like the starters. It will be very interesting to see how the Cards approach the game at CT. They have been known to use the physical approach in the past, but I haven't seen them play this year and they appear to be a very good offensive team. Will they play more like ND or UCF? We shall see! Go huskies!

Great post, David. But with several of the items above should come the caveat that when the shot is missed after a pass, there is no assist. For Wilson (or Harris) to get assists, she not only has to pass, but her teammates have to make shots — which they didn’t. It’s as much about UConn’s smothering defense than about any selfishness by the opponent. But then, you know all that.

And in the "Even Stevens" category, Azura had 2 points, 2 blocks, and 4 fouls--but 3 rebounds. ;)
