-> UConn returns to Jack Kaiser Stadium for the first time since 2018, when the Red Storm and the Huskies played a three-game set in mid-March. St. John's took the Friday opener in dominant fashion, 14-4, against Collegiate National Team member and eventual second round draft pick Tim Cate before dropping tight affairs on Saturday and Sunday by scores of 1-0 and 3-1, respectively. Both St. John's and UConn went on to earn berths in the NCAA Tournament that season. That 2018 series was the only time the two teams met during the Huskies' seven-year tenure in the American Athletic Conference.

St. John's is 59-57 against Connecticut dating back to 1956 with a vast majority of those games coming during UConn's first BIG EAST stint from 1985-2013. Included in that mark is a 5-1 record in BIG EAST Tournament games, including championship clinching wins for the Johnnies in 1993 and 2010.

From SJU Game Notes (UConn rotation confirmed):

Friday Night:
LHP Nick Mondak (3-3, 1.72 ERA)
RHP Austin Peterson (5-1, 2.86 ERA)

Saturday Gm1:
RHP Matt Semon (0-0, 6.62 ERA)
RHP Ben Casparius (5-3, 3.13 ERA)

Saturday Gm2:
RHP Brian Hendry (2-2, 4.91 ERA)
RHP Pat Gallagher (2-1, 5.54 ERA)

Sunday Game:
RHP Tyler Roche (0-2, 4.98 ERA)
RHP Joe Simeone (1-3, 6.11 ERA)

If memory serves (and at my age, it sometimes doesn't serve me well), I seem to recall that UConn beat St. Johns in what was then the Eastern Regionals to advance to the College World Series in 1979.

I'll never forget going to Big East Tournament game when Frank Viola took on Mo Vaughn and John Valentin with Seton Hall. The Big East was a bear back then and we weren't bad either!!

Korey Morton’s Dad (Kevin) was also on that Mo Vaughn/John Valentin Pirates team.

So Austin Peterson is our new #1. Interesting. He surely has earned it.

From the UConn release... “Ben Casparius will stay on schedule and pitch on Saturday in game two of the series”

The one camera through the backstop netting feed is pretty much unwatchable, giving me a headache. I think I'll watch the Mets and just listen to the Huskies. Baseball night in Queens.

I’ve already gone to WHUS...

Penders holds up Stock who has speed and gets stranded. If it were Ferrer he would have sent him.

Got to cash in soon on all these chances vs Mondak. These Ks are killing them. Strand 6. I feel Stock should have scored

Alright, that’s one back and Mondak’s pitch count is @ 92 pitches.

Peterson @ 64.
