Women UConn Softball 2023

I saw this highlight on the ESPN site. Nice play.

The offense wasn't really producing this weekend. scoring 2, 2, & 4 in the three games. They have one more game next Sunday at Burrill and then it's BE tourney time. Given UConn was 13-2 at home this year, I would think their chances are good in the tourney.
Coach Valentino has done a great job turning this team around and did it in pretty short order. Kudos to her.

Looks like the Huskies win the regular season title if Seton Hall loses one of their final two. I hate to do it but I'm gonna have to root for Butler.

Go Huskies! Best wishes from the Burrill family. Big East regular season champs, what a great accomplishment!

Hopefully it will be on UConn+.

Great year for the ladies - 33-13, outscoring the opposition 234-131. Hit .304 as a team with sophomore Lexi Hastings (.406) and freshman Grace Jenkins (.360) leading the way. Grad student Aziah James was next at .352, but the rest of the non-pitching roster all have at least one year of eligibility left. The Huskies stole 111 bases in 127 attempts (87+%) compared to the opponents 37 steals (47 attempts - 79%). Hastings (36/37) and James (32/36) led the way in that category. On the mound junior Payton Kinney (11-5, 2.83) and Hope Jenkins (Grace's twin - 14-4, 3.80) started all but seven of the team's games. Meghan O'Neil (6-4, 4.07) is only other senior/grad on the roster. The Huskies should be very strong next year as well.

I will be at the softball game today. They are trying to climb a mountain they have yet to climb that being winning the BE tourney and getting to the NCAAs. It won't be easy and they need fan support. I believe tickets are still available for most of the tourney. If you have a gap in your schedule try to get out there and support the team. Big weekend for the program.

I'm at the game right now. Not Valentino's finest game from a coaching standpoint:
1) Left Kinney in way too long and at the very least long enough to give up the grand slam. She was getting knocked around pre-grand slam. Then waits until a 2-0 count (?) to finally take her out.
2) 2 out nobody on and she chooses to intentionally walk Smith with the meat of the order to follow and they add a run. Just pitch to Smith and go after her, and see what happens. You're down a run not up a run. It makes zero sense to put a runner on like that.
3) Down 6-4 runner at first they attempt a bunt. I mean come on. You're down 2, not 1.
4) Various odd substitutions that appear to be made on the fly.

Let's see if they can come back in the 7th. Oddly coached game.

Athletic Department/Campus staff gonna be spread a bit thin @ 6p with both games going.

Need to win 3 in a row to get the bid. You really learn to appreciate Penders in a big way after you see a game like that.
