UConn Role Players Going Off On Opponents

I'm older now and don't remember specifics but did John Gwynn ever put together a career game? The Mini-Microwave had those spurts but seeing if he had a "spurt" over an entire game. Thanks in advance.

My memory is he was a pretty consistent 7-15 point guy. I don't remember many "explosions" nor do I remember games where he didn't do much. Looking back on his stats, he was a 10ppg guy for his career.

Ricky Moore’s first half against Duke leaps immediately to mind.

I do feel like Kemba’s 23 in the Elite Eight counts at that stage of his career - when he averaged 8 ppg off the bench. But that was a sign of things to come.

Might mean Eric Cobb, who went off for 30 points and 20 boards in two games at MSG in 2018.

Forgot all about Eric Cobb! What I remember less is why Cobb, after averaging 15/10 over two games, then proceeded to play single-digit minutes for three consecutive days after seemingly breaking out. Then, finally is given minutes again and goes for a double-double against Arizona. Man, those KO years were awful.

Seems like 2-3 times a year some role player on the opposing team just goes off on UConn. A player averaging 6 or 7 ppg goes off for 25. A kid averaging 14 -15 ppg goes off for 30.

Long-time fans know the drill. The scar tissue is real. Regular season, NIT, NCAA. You name it, opposing players have done it.

Question I'm struggling with is which UConn role players have had the game of their lives where the numbers were just crazy? I can remember Justin Brown having the game of his life against Arizona but he didn't go for 25.

Maybe Brimah in the game he went for about 40 against UCF? when they refused to defend against the pick and roll lob?

It's way too deep in to December and the end of the year for me to Google this stuff and get factually accurate info so I humbly as the 'yard, what examples do we have of UConn players having the game of their life against opponents??
Alleyne and Joey Calcaterra has some nuts games. Also last year Hasan Diarra had a few unbelievable games. many years ago Jamal Coombs McDaniel had a monster game against Syracuse, after doing nothing all season. Amida Brimah score 42 points in a game once, when he averaged about 6 a game.

The Ricky one is a great example. While he was a three-year starter, he was never known as a scorer. Then, he goes off for 13 tough points hitting shots he wouldn't even think of taking to basically keep us in the game. You could also throw his game vs. Iverson in the BET in there, too. I think he scored 13 or 14 in that game and he only averaged 3 or 4 for the year.

The Kemba one is less "meaningful" to me as he had three other 20+ pt games his freshmen year.

Those were all under Hurley

Jamal Coombs-McDaniel is the one that stands out. He was a highly regarded recruit who never really "got" it until that three game stretch where he became our second best player.

Brian Fair used to be good for a couple 20+ games a year (usually when JC got ejected and Howie would give me extended minutes).

I think I remember Mike Hayes coming off the bench one game and scoring in double figures out of nowhere in 05.

Toraino in the BET his freshmen year

Brian Fair used to kill Syracuse in the dome.

We tend to be very good, with a shortage of roll players

Conversely, we're the circled game for most of our opponents and many of their "roll players" have gone off on us.

So it's about a talent disparity, motivation and opportunity

Arrogant and spoiled

Ajou Deng scored 12 points and had 8 rebounds in just 17 minutes of playing time in a blowout of Boston College in 2000. He also had the highlight of the game with a blocked shot and dunk on the other end.

We thought we'd found the player Billy Packer spoke of the year before in the tournament. Sadly it would be his career game.
